Less well-known MAME recommendations?

Post by Commander Jameson » Sun Feb 10, 2013 2:45 pm

So I really enjoy 'The Unconverted' section in the mag, and every month I fire up MAME to check out less popular arcade games, good or bad!

So it got me to thinking-what MAME games are your favourites that don't get a lot of attention, weren't converted to every platform going, that you think others should know about? I aim to play every one suggested, as I'm having a MAME session right now. Post high scores if you wanna brag and give me a challenge too!

Maybe not less well known but certainly weren't converted, Dangun Feveron and Xexex.

Nitro Ball.

It's sort of Outzone/Commando meets pinball/obstacle course kind of thing.

And Libble Rabble. The surround-baddies-using-string-and-pegs-em-up. Works best if you configure controls for dual analogue sticks.
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

Magmax.

We used to have the cab in our chippie. Took me an age to remember the name of the game.

Tip: Always stay on the surface level if you can, if you drop underground, its much trickier.

Can't remember my high score but i could cycle it 4 or 5 times. Doubt i could do that now though

Four games in my favourites folder that don't seem to get mentioned that often:

Shocking (lots of vartiety in the gameplay)
Magic Crystals (isometric wizardy shooty game)
Steel Force (I like this because it's a bit like Alien Breed)
Action Hollywood (top down maze sort of game)
If it's slower than me, dumber than me and it tastes good ... tough titty.

Cannon dancer
Charlie ninja

Couple I'm playing at the moment, don't think they had home conversions, mainly because mid 90s and everything was going 3d instead of sprite based.

There's a cool Namco game called Motos that I like. You have to bump baddies off the playing area and it's very addictive and playable. It got a Spectrum conversion back in the day but i'm not so sure about the other 8bit machines, the 128 version had nice music too. :D

Dangun was already on my MAME faves list - must have been in the mag at some point? Regardless, fired it up again and it IS awesome!
Couldn't get on with Xexex, felt a bit stiff and sluggish tbh?

LOVING Nitro Ball! Need to get the twin sticks sorted as this would be great played SmashTV style! Libble Rabble - woa 1983! Nice game but I was absolutely dire at it :)

Ah, maybe try the jap version of Xexex, you get a different set of weapons, I think it plays better, that's if you've not tried that one already.
