Franchises/Series' that haven't let you down

Post by Megamixer » Fri Jan 04, 2013 8:53 am

Simple question: which videogame franchises or series' have never (personally) let you down with a sequel/installment that you didn't enjoy?

My personal pick would be the Paper Mario series. Even though there have only been four games since the N64 days, each sequel is packed with the same familiar charm and solid gameplay while also bringing new ideas, creativity and core mechanics to keep things fresh and new. I love all of the Paper Mario games and for me, the series is a system seller.

Anybody else got a series they can say the same about?
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

Max Payne. Just got MP3 with the Blockbuster vouchers I got for Christmas and it's brilliant.

An honourable mention also goes to Saints Row.

All the original Streetfighter II titles for me brought something different to the table - SFII, SFII Championship, SFII Turbo, Super SFII and Super SFII Turbo/X

Same for the SF Alpha/Zero series

All Gran Turismo games

All the Burnouts are incredible - especially the first 4, the way the series evolved is epic

Any Zelda game on a Nintendo format

Panzer Dragoon - hell yeah

Thunderforce series

R-Type series

Gradius series

There's loads......

The only franchise I know that has stayed true to its roots, ever since the start is Virtua Fighter. Never let me down once

Another one is F Zero

Tricky as every series has at least one bad egg
Dynasty Warriors? Granted they are possibly the worst offenders for copy paste game design, but at least we know what we are in for
Shining force - See above
Disgaea - See above
Fatal fury/Real bout - see above

Virtua fighter is nearly in there if it wasn't for that sodding Mega drive version
King of fighters is also nearly in if it wasnt for that sodding King of fighters M

not all where nice
Any Zelda game on a Nintendo format

Virtua Fighter - a series that has never strayed from its roots and always been at the top of the fighting game genre.

Championship/Football Manager (apart from the unplayable disaster of CM4) - If you consider that this series has been around for nearly 20 years it is amazingly consistent and always brilliant.

Online COD - this generation they always deliver a superb multiplayer experience, it fully deserves to be the number one game.

Mass Effect - Only three games but all masterpieces and taken as a trilogy its the best game of all time.

Sly Raccoon! Even over Ratchet & Clank and I love those too.

The Soul Reaver/Blood Omen series, granted Blood Omen 2 is by far the worst but I still loved it, I am hoping for a HD remake collection so badly or even better a new game altogether. I would buy a console just to play it if i didn't own it already, i am not sure if you class the next two games as a franchise but Demons Souls/Dark Souls has to get a mention from me, the latter being the pinnacle in gaming for me.

I agree to an extent but MW3 let the series down badly, Black Opps 2 is superb and for me is virtually on a par with the original Modern Warfare which for me remains the best in the console Call of Duty series.

I've enjoyed all 3 Uncharteds so far, number 3 nearly annoyed me with the messing about in the desert etc but overall I still really enjoyed the game.

Struggling to think of anything else that didnt end up going off the boil.

I would also add GTA but I only played to death the 1st one and IV, I never had the rest other than Vice City but that was for my PC which broke and I never relaced. I'm guessing the rest were pretty good, lol.

I'd say the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series.
Enjoyed every version of that - even though Tie Fighter was in my opinion far superior to the others, they were all still fantastic games.

Surely it's time for a new version.

Ridge Racer has always been fantastic but over the last four or five games the gameplay hasn't changed at all.

Final Fantasy has only had 1 blip out of around 15 major titles, a pretty damn good effort.

Metroid has always been consistantly excellent.

Virtua Fighter has evolved superbly with the times but always kept its roots. I'm absolutely crap at it though.

Another vote for the FM/CM series, a few little bumps in the road with DRM and copy protection, especially FM08 where people couldn't activate there game on the release day, but I always get over 100hours plus for my money with every game.
