Your favorite gaming era?

Post by Combo-Breaker » Thu Dec 06, 2012 9:03 am

I'd have to say that mine was probably the 16-bit era.

Just being given a SNES game as a gift for Christmas or my B'day as a kid was something that I'll remember forever. And on top of that, the jump in everything from the 8-bit era to the 16-bit era was absolutely huge on all levels.

You?

We have had this topic many times before but go on then.

Has to be the 16-bit era for me too. I had my ST first, then my Lynx and then a Mega Drive too and towards the end of the 16-bit era I got my Jaguar. That was the golden age of gaming for me and where all my best memories come from.

Current gen and I have to thank the missus for it too. I would never have bought a new console, I waited about 3 years before getting an original xbox but I got a 360 at launch for xmas! I didn't even know I was getting it :D It was (and still is) the best prezzie I have ever had and it reset my gaming switch from retrogamer back to gamer - which in hindsight? I used to be, retrogaming just filled the void between buying current games (when theretro stuff was new in my youth) and buying current games again (now) if you catch my drift.

32bit for me. Love the current gen and the previous gen and I really like 16bit stuff but the Playstation/Saturn/N64 era was when I really started getting into gaming. Even if I didn't play many of the games at the time, I still get a nice warm feeling from playing mid-nineties arcade titles and early 3D stuff.
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

I love the 16/32 and 128?? bit eras all pretty equally.

16 bit gave us the first truly brilliant sports, fighting, and action adventure games. 32bit was a taste of the arcade in the home and the golden era of the japanese role playing game. The last generation gave us stunning visuals, online gaming and some real series peaks.

I was tempted to say the 8 bit era and the C64, it was where I cut my gaming teeth as it were, but, I'm thinking the 16 bit era was my favourite now. I still love the latest machines, but I don't play them as much as I did the 16 bit platforms.

Funnily I went from a Sega MD in 1991-92 to a Commodore Amiga 500+ in late 1994. Although the Amiga wasn't as good for fighting games, it was excellent for turn based strategy like Civilization which I'd had a interest in even before I bought the MD. When I found a friend was selling their Amiga I simply had to get one. I was only 16 at the time so I had to sell my Mega Drive to get it, but it was worth it.

Def the 32 bit era for me. Ps1, Saturn, N64, 3DO. I also like the 16 bit/128 bit eras.

There is no such thing as 128 bit is there? All current CPU's are 64 bit.

Quite a lot of them are 32 bit, even. Most PC games will happily run in 32-bit Windows at any rate. The only real advantages of 64 bit processing are that you can easily deal with higher precision numbers and address more than 4GB RAM, neither of which matters much for games. The rest is just marketing spin.

don't have one at all,the spectrum era is probably my least favourite because i never really get very far in the games but i still have fond memories of plenty of games on it.apart from that any other system i've owned has at least a few games i would happily play four hours at a time.

PC, around year 2000. Not sure what that would be classed as TBH. Post - Voodoo/3dfx Direct X7-ish lol. So so many immense games arrived at around the same time.

It would be the late 16-bit Amiga for myself, probably the "AGA" years. Too much time was spent on, Banshee, SWOS, The Settlers, Worms, On The Ball and Super Skidmarks.

Mid-80's. 8-bits in their prime and fantastic arcade titles to choose from. TWTD. [nostalgic sigh]
