It's about time someone mentioned the greatest shoot-em-up of all time, Thunderforce 3 on the Megadrive. That's a fact by the way - and it is shared and agreed with by the entire world. If you don't think it is, basically you're a mutant and your brain is messed up.

Look at these beautiful screenshots. (You can't hear the incredible soundtrack unfortunately for your ears)

Good call! I don't understand why this mix of genres wasn't used more. Someone needs to do a modern Actraiser.
Never played Actraiser, never relaised it was a mix of gernes either. This has piqued my interest somewhat.

How could I have forgot Dungeon Master, possibly the most influential acion-rpg? of the 16bits era.

Saved me from saying it, thanks(athough Amiga version for me)

So, thats my choice "used up" by someone else i vote North and South, Amiga. There is a whole horde of Snes games i would say but im pretty sure Mario Kart and the like will crop up without my help.

Anyways, back to North and South

Marko's Magic Football's always been a favourite:

I was entirely serious about the two TI games earlier, but just in case someone thinks I'm not, then I'm going to nominate Pinball Fantasies on the Amiga.

Slightly superior than the original Pinball Dreams, but there's really not much in it, I wouldn't be surprised if both games made it into a Top 200.

In fact, it's so playable, I think I'll have a game of it tonight.

Cheers! I was tempted to go for several others but I couldn't resist that game.

Others that came to mind were Simulcra, Sonic The Hedgehog, Sensible Soccer, Kick Off 2, Midwinter, Carrier Command, Speedball, Speedball II Brutal Deluxe, Blue Lightning, STUN Runner (Lynx version), etc. So many to choose from!

Yes sir, a superb choice, I cannot resist a different take on the racing game, No Second Prize on the Atari ST, absolutely mental game after the likes of Full Throttle on the Speccy.

Seen as there was no definative answer, here is S.T.U.N. Runner on the Atari Lynx.

A simply unbelievable conversion of the arcade game that no other home system of the time got even close to pulling off. Still probably the single most impressive commercial game I have ever seen.

Never enjoyed this in the same way as the original Kick Off on the Atari ST.

There was a looseness/fluidity in the controls of the original which was lost in the more refined action of the sequel. Yes, you don't have the 'bells and whistles' of the sequel, however, in terms of actual gameplay the original has its own little idiosyncrasies which made it a gem. Who needs aftertouch anyway! ;)

I'll see your 16-bit racers and raise you Vroom, by Lankhor, on the ST / Amiga.

Super-smooth graphics combining bitmaps and vectors, and racing with an early attempt at proper 3D handling (you could spin the car) despite the approximated view of the 2D style roadway.
