Name your 3 favourite wrestling games ever!
What are they and why?
Re: Name your 3 favourite wrestling games ever!
Ooft. All right, let's give this a bash:
1. WWF No Mercy - Of course. The most responsive, fluid and massive of any of AKI's N64 wrestling games. Not just the best wrestling game on the N64, but one of the best N64 games, period.
2. WWE SmackDown!: Here Comes The Pain - Possessed deepest roster of any WWE game to date (Goldberg! Nash! Steiner!), and it marked the introduction of a brilliant new grappling system and many new match modes.
3. WWE All Stars - Exactly the sort of fun, whimsical WWE game that I'd been wanting for years. So over the top, but that's what's so satisfying about it. I'd rather play this game than the one THQ currently cough up every November.

1. No Mercy- Anyone can tell you just how great this one was, a real testament to the Attitude era.
2. The Day of Reckoning Series- Both were great fun games that even at times looked graphically better then that year's PS2 entries. A real breath of fresh air after the bad and average WWE games the Gamecube was graced with before.
3. Smackdown Vs Raw 06- First game in the SD series for me and to this day, the only one I nearly completed 100% (Missing Jake The Snake Roberts, thank you very much PSP)

1. WWF Wrestlemania : The Arcade Game (Saturn)
The in your face cartoony approach to Wrestling games was a great take on the sport, and this game was a great beat em up alternative which didn't really feel like a wrestling game.
2. Royal Rumble Dreamcast
The Special Moves were great in this game, and the game still retained a more arcade to simulation feel, which I loved.
3. WWE: Day of Reckoning
A great wrestling game, which was a great mixture of arcade and simulation, making the game feel like less of a chore to complete than most WWE games.

WWF No Mercy - The king of wrestling games. Essentially the same gameplay as the other AKI wrestling games, but this had better graphics, more options, more moves and a great story mode.
Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 - Almost as good as No Mercy but the graphics aren't as good and lacks some of the WWF/E specific moves. It did have a mask editor which No Mercy lacked which was awesome, and the option to have a additional "super special". Also it retained that chunky quality to the wrestler models that I thought had more character.
Day Of Reckoning 2 - I'd still be playing this game now if it wasn't for one thing, that stupid black waistline on every character you make. It just ruinind the look of every costume that wasn't black.

WCW - N64

Fire Pro Wrestling Returns on rhe PS2, the reason being I lke pretty much all the Fire Pro games but this one is the cream of the crop for me.
WWF Wrestlemania in the arcades, more beat em up than wrestling games but the over the top moves do it for me.
WWF Wrestlefest, I like both this and Superstars but for me ths just edges it.

1. WCW/ NWO Revenge - N64 - Uses the same fighting system as WWF No Mercy.
2. Tecmo World Wrestling - NES - Hidden gem. Loads of special moves for each character.
3. SUper Wrestlemania - SNES - Loved the graphics at the time. Bit slow now though.

WWF Wrestlefest - The best wrestling game without any doubt, never has another official WWE/WWF game got so much right. Tag Team mode, Royal Rumble and multiplayer modes combined with a roster including legends like Mr. Perfect, Ted Dibiase, Jake "The Snake" Roberts and The Demolition. They all have their own love sets, complete with finishers and the game even has commentary. SUch a shame this never made it out of the arcades.
Fire Pro Wrestling S: 6 Man Scramble - This Japan only release for the Saturn has one of the biggest rosters I have ever seen in a wrestling game and pretty much every play mode available including UFC style death matches and battle royals. Although not being official it features wrestlers from the old WWF, WCW and even some ECW superstars too. Play as Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Mick Foly, The Undertaker, Bret Hart, Kevin Nash, Sting, Ric Flair and many more all with their own move sets, signature moves and finishers.
WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role - Out of all the official WWE/WWF games made for home machines I feel this game for the PS1 got the most right. For a start it was set in the attitude era, the golden age of wrestling. So you have people like The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, the original DX and Owen Hart. There are multiple titles to challenge for, career mode and backstage fighting. This game still holds up really well today for me, unlike many other 3D wrestling games.

In order of release:
Rock n Wrestle (Spectrum)
http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseek ... loadpics=3
Looks a bit ropey, even at the time its doubled sprites looked blocky, but it was one of (if not the) first wrestling games to have context sensitive action, so your current move would determine what you could do next.
Championship Wrestling on the C64 does give it a good run for its money on the 8 bits though (http://www.lemon64.com/?mainurl=http%3A ... 3FID%3D457)
Giant Gram 2000 (Dreamcast) would be next:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt1WSzdBm1g
Japanese only I'm afraid, a rare instance of me playing an import game, but there's a self booting rip of this hovering round the internet. I know because I made it
In my defence, the DC was long dead by then and I used a non-booting rip of it, so I didn't damage sales. One of those games where things just seem to flow together, so even though its initially incomprehensible it doesn't take long to get to grips with. The Japanese commentary may well be gibberish to my ears, but its very enthusiastic, atmospheric and sometimes amusing gibberish.
The last one I've given any serious time to is the aforementioned Day of Reckoning. Either 1 or 2 will do on the GC, there's not much in it. The elastic clothing is somewhat unrealistic, but it appeals to the little boy in me.

Have you played the C64 version of Rock n Wrestle Ant? I think it's got the edge on the Spectrum version, I think the Spectrum version gave you 5 characters to face twice whereas the C64 version gave you 10 different characters and the C64 version has a decent tune as well.

1) Wrestlefest.
It's such a shame that this never got converted. What a game! Still blows me away to this day.
2) Smackdown!
The one with The Rock and The Hulk on the front cover, it's for the PS2. Probably the greatest wrestling game ever.
3) Royal Rumble.
This blew me away when it came out on the snes. Such a jump in quality from the previous wwf snes game.

It predates my owning a C64 and my friends moving to them, so its mainly a nostalgia kick for the Speccy version.

I see, I'd played the C64 version before the Spectrum one and I was quite excited when the Spectrum version came out, that was until I played it for a bit, a bit of a dissapointing purchase for me.Antiriad2097 wrote:It predates my owning a C64 and my friends moving to them, so its mainly a nostalgia kick for the Speccy version.
