Yellow Tabs On Megadrive Games

Post by retroreviewgames » Fri Aug 17, 2012 9:49 pm

Why do some Megadrive/Genesis games have a yellow tab on them? I noticed one on a copy of Road Rash 2 that I bought 8)

I think it's EA games that have them.

EA didn't go through the normal licensing procedure for Megadrive games, instead reverse engineered the hardware and produced their own carts. Pissed Sega off no end. I think Accolade did something similar.

Codemasters did the same with their carts with extra joypad ports.

Yeah Accolade had their own too. They still continued after SEGA started putting in their Lockout chips. I guess they liked the brand look.
To be honest I always thought the EA carts looked kinda' cool.

But then again Code Masters uses differently shaped carts on most consoles

EA MD games were officially licensed, Accolade's were not.

Way back when, we thought they were extra buttons. Every time we pushed them it obviously dislodged the cartridge, crashing the game. This theory didn't last long.

Didn't they reverse-engineer the MD and basically threaten to just go and make games anyway unless Sega gave them a license? I'm sure I read that's EA got into officially making games for the MD.

That is how Accolade did it yes, Sega even took them to court. They signed up as an official developer eventually.

EA just produced their own carts much like Codemasters did.

I liked the four player cart design as I always thought the SNES multitap was a barely-supported extra-cost waste.
