Always from left to right?

Post by MattyC64c » Wed Jul 18, 2012 12:23 pm

Nearly every 2D I've ever played has scrolled left to right, other than top down games such as 1943, was there any other exceptions to this rule? Also why left to right? This even happens on fighting games like Street Fighter, player one is always on the left. Why is this?

Simple. We read left to right, so it's natural for the human eye to follow things from left to right.

Universe Unknown for the MSX scrolls right to left Video of Stage 1

One minor (and largely irrelevant) side point: Arabic is written right to left but I suppose the influence of the Arabic-speaking world on the scrolling shoot-'em-up isn't all that obvious.

Plenty of other games feature certain levels which scroll to the left but the above are all games that only scroll to the left.

You still went left and right.

Shooter wise Vangard on the 2600 went in every direction

Some Earthworm Jim levels mixed it up a bit

Airwolf 2 is another. [C64] [Amstrad]

It's not very good though.

Choplifter has your base on the right, so you scroll to the left through the level (then back again).

Kamikaze on C64 scrolls from left to right.

Sideways SEUCK games do too.

Japanese read from right to left too though.

Yes indeedy, and since Japan pretty much resurrected console gaming it's no wonder it stuck.

Anyone out there can jump in with hardware sprite scrolling? Wasn't the reason the Sonic games were so fast on Megadrive because it was so good at horizontal hardware scrolling? Like a showcase of how "faster" it was at it than the NES/SNES?

I remember reading quite a few Amiga articles about how horizontal scrolling at speed was the Holy Grail for the time. Before 3D polygons kicked off.

I checked that before posting the first time (since it was more relevant than Arabic) and found that it's a bit more complicated than that. Traditionally the characters are laid out reading in columns, from left to right. Modern Japanese, however, is often ordered in rows, and when that's the case they read from left to right.
