The game i've been trying to remember has been revealed to me thanks to noobish
It's The Warriors of Zypar, a really excellent and addictive future sport sim with one or two players. Fight each other to deliver as many balls into the robots mouth as possible.

Yeah, people seemed to forget that Square did some pretty decent shooters back in the day. I know I did.

Does Wolfchild for the Amiga 500 count? Put this in not knowing what to expect. Looks alot like a mega drive game than anything else. Seems like a combination of Strider and Altered Beast. The graphics are excellent and works perfectly with the megadrive controller.
