Short answer: No. It only accepts NTSC carts. PAL carts will not work without making modifications to the hardware.

loads of genesis games work on the uk megadrive.

loads of uk megadrive titles work on the japanese machine.

unfortunately i have no experience of trying to run uk md games on the genesis. but i don't see why it would be a problem for early titles, they seem to be universal up to a certain date.

some later titles appear to be region free too, the UK version of ristar works on the jap MD for instance.

The megadrive has 4 jumpers, 2 are used per region.

Megadrives have either 50hz/eng (Europe/hongkong) 60hz/eng (america/canada) and 60hz/jap (japan)
I'm not sure what Korea and some other places received but it would have to be a combination of the above settings.
They were sometimes used for region protection. ie if a game checks for 60hz/jap and finds any other combination it will display a warning screen.

Do a search on the sega 16 forums and you should find a list of region locked games, if you have an american system you'll also need to find the thread on pal enhanced games as they don't run correctly at 60hz.
