Is an Xbox worth it alongside a 360 ?

Post by SJ_Sathanas » Sun Apr 08, 2012 2:43 pm

I'm wondering, has the recent raft of HD updates and 360 backwards compatability good enough to render an original Xbox truely obsolete ?
I really quite fancy one again and when I had a 360 most of my prefered Xbox games didn't work on the 360.

AFAIK there hasn't been a BC update for ages.

That's pretty much the cut of my ponderings. Doesn't strike me as a priority for anyone at MS HQ, too.

YES ABSOLUTELY!

I'm gutted at the complete lack of Xbox compatibility updates. Even the games that are supposed to work often don't. I've given up buying Xbox games simply because it's so frigging hit-and-miss. It's a shame because there really are some amazing Xbox games that never had their due because of the absolute dominance of the PS2.

Given that a) there has never been anywhere near 100% BC and b) you never know what you might want to play in terms of original Xbox, it's probably better to have both. The old slabs don't exactly cost the earth these days either. Same with the games at the moment too - a total buyers market and the best time to pick stuff up.

In my experience of original Xbox games that I've tried to play on the 360.....

Doom 3 - severe framerate issues that aren't there on the original Xbox

Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast - framerate issues, graphical glitches and horrific loading times. Now and then the game would completely lock up on loading screens.

Panzer Dragoon Orta - crashes a short way into the game and won't let you progress any further.

Oddworld: Strangers Wrath - doesn't work at all.

Yep, I'd say that an original Xbox is well worth it alongside a 360. :)

Any console that buggers up something like Outrun 2006 deserves to have some friendly competition so now there's even more argument for an original Xbox :P

Also:

GTA3 and Vice City: Frame rate drop when cornering in vehicles. Still playable but really noticeable.
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee: Almost constant sound drop. Sometimes there's no sound whatsoever, or it's extremely low.
Superman Returns: Refuses to work.
Halo: Combat Evolved: Only runs if you set your Xbox 360 to non-HD 640x480 mode. Otherwise it's sound with no picture.

Like I said, I've not bothered to keep or buy any other Xbox games as it's too hit and miss, even if you check the compatibility pages. The last Patch was November 2007, so you can see how eager they are to update it.

^Halo runs fine on my 360 and I've set it to 1080p mode thru HDMI. How odd.

Original Xbox is a great machine, the BC on 360 doesn't really cut it and it's weird how you can only play about 40-50% of the original games, and even then most have some kind of 'issue'. With an old Xbrick, you won't be having that irk (and it's a huge one). Even BC capable games, I play them on the original machine...though the Splinter Cell games look extremely lush, playing them via 360.

That's because it runs at 50hz as long as when you set up your video options you told your 360 it could ouput at 50hz it should work, if you're using a VGA cable though.. you've got no chance, as VGA is 60hz only

I've got both the real disc and the games on demand version, both run fine through a HDMI cable with the screen at 720p @ 50hz

Ahh, that could be what it was. I was running my 360 via my 1080P monitor through VGA. Now it's hooked into my TV via HDMI I haven't tried it since. Thanks for the heads-up.

For the price (£10-£15 from crack generators) it's one of the
best value consoles around. A modded one is even better though!
