What gimmicky effects amaze you every time?

Post by theantmeister » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:24 am

Games are full of trickery and every so often games will amaze you with some new graphical or auditory slight-of-hand.

Stuff like the way you can see the sky "reflected" in the glass of your car in Daytona, or the way everything gets brighter in Manx TT when you come out of tunnels, and of course the ubiquitous lens flare.

What trick amazes you still? Do you know how it was done? And did knowing how it is done ruin it for you?

Reflections in water, mainly puddles, still amazes me.

The quality, both in the smoothness of the scrolling and the number of layers, of the parallax scrolling in StarRay (ST).

Cant remember the course, but it is on GT3 and you are driving along and all the light is shining through the leaves on the tree's, just like in really life!

Hardware scaling!

Especially in STUN Runner and Blue Lightning on the Lynx!

@DreamcastRIP
- I totally agree about Star Ray too! Awesome game!

Got to be water effects. Though very simple nowadays, I still get a bit awestruck by the water in Morrowind. Also really liked it in Die Hard Vendetta on the 'Cube, how you could shoot holes in water-filled tanks and it'd come seeping out.

Also love 'squishy' textures in games, particularly like the alien egg-sacs in Halo 3 on 360! It's a pretty simple technical feat but I enjoy rubbery, shiny, squishy-feeling textures in games full stop, Prey is pretty old skool but is full of these types of highly-solid feeling effects.

Also another shout-out for parallax trickery, like on Megadrive Granada where you're moving about on top this flying spaceship thing and you can see the forests deep beneath you, great feeling of height.

Got to be water effects for me too. I haven't played Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD yet, but I was pretty blown away by the water effects in the original on Xbox, still think it's one of the most impressive looking games I've ever seen. :)

Also really like waterfall spume effects in games as well, if it's well done it can really add a lot of atmosphere. :)

Hair and clothes moving realistically - ask Pixar, it's a difficult thing to get right!

The following :-

The parallax scrolling in 'Shadow of the Beast'.

The parallax scrolling for level 9 of 'First Samurai'. The multiple lifts are amazing. It is only on the Amiga version though.

The introduction for 'Blood Money' with the speech and music.

The animation in 'Prince of Persia'.

The landscape detail in 'EF2000'.

The music in the introduction of 'Gods'.
