Atari is 40 years old!

Post by resident paul » Fri Mar 16, 2012 7:21 am

Is it that long ago?

I found some news of a reunion of the original gang later in the year (thanks to martyg for the facebook link!) & 2 of them will be speaking on the 24/ 25 march!

That, the release of Mangavox Odyssey, the release of Computer Space in late '71, we have reached 40 years of commercial gaming (or gaming for the masses) and 50 years since Spacewar!. We have come a long way since then.

It's a shame that Atari (the real one) is not longer with us. It was one of the most innovative companies, which almost single-handedly created the video game industry.

Sacrilege! :D

Hey, in Europe we had no NES for the best part of the '80s, yet we played games like crazy on our Ataris and later on our computers. Even if Nintendo hadn't appeared we would have a video game industry (perhaps an even better one, since Nintendo moved video games to kiddy-only territory). But without Atari video games would probably never have kicked off.

You have an Atari machine made in the last 15 years? :D

Yeah the machines may still be great (the 2600 being my favourite console and 800XL second-favourite computer after the Speccy) but Atari now is just a title given to a company who mostly sell censored games.

Atari:your mistakes will probably be talked about for years to come, but without you, i'd never of had my 2600, my 800XL and Lynxes....and so many T-Shirts would have lacked a trendy symbol for students to wear without a s*dding clue who it belongs to.
