Poll: What console is the best console for 2D shoot em ups?

As title says, which console do you believe is best for the shoot em up genre?

For me the Megadrive just grabs top spot from the PC Engine, Saturn in 3rd.

Thats a toughie but the PCE gets top spot for me, then the SMD. Maybe the Virtual Console

The PC Engine was made for 2D shooters although most of the other systems had plenty of good ones.

A Saturn capable of playing Japanese imports is by far and away the best console for 2D shmups, imho. My second choice would have been Mega Drive closely followed by PC Engine.

I think most systems have a good selection of shoot-em-ups, and if you strip away the hardware itself and look at the playability, there are some real gems even on the Spectrum (although it's an area where the C64 dominated), but from a console point of view it has to be the PC Engine and it's probably the main reason why I bought mine!

Even though I have no right, I am adding the rule that it has to be 'out of the box'. No mods allowed. Then a further rule: if your first choice was disqualified by rule 'A' then your second choice can not be from the same manufacturer. Which would obviously shift your choice to the more realistic option of the PCE.

I think it depends on just what type of shmups you're looking for.

I have to go with the 360 myself, since I'm into danmaku types more than anything else.

For more traditional types..... I'm not sure. Either PC-Engine or Saturn.

....or you could just use a Japanese Saturn from the start

Which is what I have. I'd say if buying a Saturn for this genre, that's probably the way to go, just start with a JP unit.

My Saturn is a white NTSC-J model so it therefore plays all those great Japan-only 2D shmups 'out of the box'!

Edit: thinking back though, Thunderforce 4, or was it 5? as well as being very good, was a beautiful looking game on the SMD. That, along with games like Hellfire and Gynoug make it a very tough choice tbh. Its a pity you cant cast 2 votes.
