Why were C64 games dearer than their Spectrum counterpart?

Post by Green Bert » Tue Feb 07, 2012 2:19 pm

Example taken from an advert for Ikari Warriors from 1986;
ZX Spectrum - £7.95, Commodore 64 - £9.95 (both cassette versions). Both conversions were handled by the same software house, Elite.

Obviously because they were on the far superior machine and C64 owners could afford the higher price....

...again, why were C64 games dearer than their Spectrum counterpart? Was it a licensing issue? I always just took it for granted back in the day and though that it must have taken more time to program fo the C64, hence the higher costs.

I thought because there where more Spectrum owners, so they could sell Spectrum games for less and still make profit.. As less people owned C64's and Amstrads they had to charge more to make money

:? That was my inital thinking, userbase often cired along with extra development costs.Amiga games cost more than ST games in the early days, despite often being little more than beefed up ports from ST.When asked why, swear developers used to fall back on the smaller user base answer.

Good point, but by that logic, the Amstrad version should have cost 99p but was actually £1 more than the ZX!!

Its a good question - I really don't know, its the same here for Amiga / ST - a fiver more (and in this example, the C64 version should have been f*cking free its so bad!)

For the same reason many PS3 games were, initially at least, more expensive than on Xbox 360.

C64 coders charged by the hour. :D

C64 cost more than Speccy, so publishers thought owners would be willing to pay more for the games?. :?

It is a question that needs to be put to someone from an old software house..... Maybe the next one that pops up for questions in the forum for the mag?..
