Ok I've started on dodonpachi resurection. This seems as good a game as any for us to get some high scores going as it's available in the uk and pretty cheap to boot.
So far I'm confused, which seems par for the course on a cave shmup
The scoring seems similar-ish to deathsmiles as you wait to unload a power shot when there are lots of enemies around to increase the multiplier. Anyone know how to get into the secret routes on stages 1, 2 and 4?
I'm going to concentrate on 360 mode to start on the scores if anyone wants to join me?
The scoring is MAINLY chaining... but put together with the cancelling in a way that just makes it awesome.
You want the chain number to be high.... but what REALLY gives you points is collecting all those stars from cancelling, which are multiplied by your chain count. Big stars are the best of course. Mostly you'll get the small ones.
Hint, most of the time if you stop hitting/killing for a moment, the chain counter will turn purple and slowly drop.... but if your hyper meter is FULL at the time, it'll INSTANTLY drop to zero. That's something to keep in mind, because it's easy to screw up with that and blow the whole chain.
But the main thing is, keep chaining, destroying enemies and keeping laser on large foes, use hyper, and while in hyper try to cancel bullets WITHOUT killing things too much ( so they get to fire more bullets). While in hyper most enemies go berserk and will fire tons and tons of crap at you.
Oh, and when your chain count starts to get real high, you'll start to have bullets occaisionally cancel into these quick little purple fireballs that come at you fast but only last for a split second. You can see them in replays alot. They appear way more often in the Black Label version.
As for the hidden paths,
to get to the hidden path, start the game, then stand up, and go bash your face into a wall about 100 times.
...ok, that's not how to do it, but it'll FEEL something like that at times.
THEORETICALLY the method of getting to the hidden path isnt that hard, but in PRACTICE half the time it just never wants to freaking work.
In stage one, you need to do the following:
First, you need to grab the first 3 bees. They're not hard to find. If you havent already seen them, bees are hidden in every stage, there's quite a number of them, and are invisible until you blast the spot they're on with a laser. They can be green or red and will switch color every now and then; for this mode, it doesnt matter overmuch what color they are (for other modes, it DOES matter). Find them and get all of them.
2, at some point during this first section you need to build up full hyper meter. If I remember correctly you ALSO have to actually USE it during this section and then have it refilled BEFORE you reach the point where the path begins. It's important for the next bit anyway, which is:
3, there's these three tanks, see, in the first part of the stage. BIG tanks. They sorta start on one side, and move towards the other. They head towards these big silos, which they will run over and destroy. You need to stop all three tanks from hitting those silos.
If you've done everything CORRECTLY, the normal first midboss wont appear, and instead you'll sorta launch to the left, the screen will go all funky, and the alternate midboss will appear (it's actually the first boss from the first game... all of the alt midbosses are from that).
There is actually a hidden bit in all five stages, complete with hidden midboss. Once you get the one on stage 1 going, it'll happen automatically for stage 2, and so on. I forget exactly what knocks you OUT of it, but it's possible to screw up and have the path drop, so you'll get to another stage and it just wont happen in that stage.
The main reason do to this is that the hidden bosses fire WAY MORE bullets at you and are very good for getting tons of points with a hyper. This will also change a bit of the actual level as well (which also means different bee locations, if you're trying to get them).
It's important in both the normal mode, and in Arrange A. In Arrange B you'll ALWAYS go to the hidden bosses.
Anyway, as scoring goes, I'd be happy to compare scores with you, though the scoreboard on my version isnt the same as yours.
