C64 Vs Spectrum - Let's end the debate

Post by Ash » Fri Dec 30, 2011 6:15 am

Right then you lot...

I'd like to know which is best. C64 or Spectrum. And I'd like to know your reasons why.

Apologies if this is a topic covered here before (it must be!) but this is an official Retro Gamer poll and the results will be published in the magazine.

I voted C64 not only because it was my main machine back in the day but it's the system that I always go back to when I want a uncomplicated 30 min blast on something, normally via emulation nowadays though as I don't have the patience for loading times or room to have my real C64 set up..

The Spectrum is gonna win this poll anyway tho as there are a lot more Speecy fans on here than C64... poor deluded fools

Is'nt Darren running the very same poll at the moment? or is this one for Gamestm?.

As stated in Darren's poll, C64 all the way, SID chip, silky smooth scrolling etc made it a dream machine.Ignore all the tosh of blocky graphics, only to look at The Last Ninja series of games as an example of what could be done on the system.

So C64 got poor conversions of R-Type, Wec Le Mans, Chase H.Q etc, countless superb shooters on the system, driving games? S.C.I, Powerdrift, Turbo Outrun, Super Cycle and so forth.

Compare say C64 Platoon or Mega Apocalypse to the Speccy versions and you'll see which was the superior gaming system.

The Spectrum as all my school friends had one (not a C64 in sight) therefore plenty of games doing the rounds as I could only afford a couple of new games per year. Plus the wonderful Crash & YS each month to read during lessons.

This one is definitely for Retro Gamer, but I specifically need the poll results, which don't appear in the From The Forum thread.

Good look on trying this, this is the kind of debate that is without end

For me its the Spectrum, vibrant colours, great games, the system has that something for me that the C64 just doesn't have, can't put my finger on it, but i'm drawn to the Spectrum.

The ZX Spectrum was smaller, and therefore is the CLEAR winner.

Well, that's what you get for not stipulating an actual category for the vote!

Spectrum's power pack kept my feet warm. There's another category!

Without doubt the Spectrum.

It wins out over the C64 with its high res as opposed to blocky graphics, vibrant as opposed to muddy colours and much better games selection.

Also I prefer the sound of the AY chip to the SID (There I said it!!!!)

 C64 Platoon:Non-blocky sprites, colours used to create superb atmosphere and wonderous soundtrack.

Spectrum Platoon:High Res. Sprites, but missing lot of C64 games atmosphere.

Love it when Speccy owners come back with 'much better selection of games'-OK, you had Chaos, Rebelstar 1+2 which never graced C64, but just what are all these games we 'lowly' C64 owners missed out on?

Speccy had issues doing diagonal scrolling if i recal, hence something like Led Storm doing the old push scroll method

If it's on price, then the Spectrum wins hands down, obviously the c64 was more powerful, they both had similar conversions and control methods and with either disk or tape for loading, it's a bit like when people say ph the x68000 had the best arcade conversions, it may have but at £2500 or whatever it was you had to pay the premium, so for me the Spectrum offered better value than the c64 or cpc.

The C64 wiped the floor with the Spectrum - miles better sound, graphics and games. It's not even a contest.
