Ones I can think of (may sense a theme here)

Ninja Gaiden - Nes
Bionic Commando - Nes
Strider - Nes (bare with me hear, It's not a better game but its better than any possible straight conversion from a technical standpoint)
Shadow Dancer - Megadrive

Good call on Automic Runner! Data East are one of my favourite developers for the MD

Bomb Jack on the Speccy, imho.

Soul Calibur on Dreamcast.

Plus most Naomi-to-Dreamcast conversions.

That's as maybe but were they actually better than the arcade coin-op? Afaik they weren't.

Caveat: You've not stated which home conversion of Salamander you're thinking of either...

I beg to differ......

Also Combat School was better on C64 than arcade. I was sick and tired of getting my fingers nipped on the trackerball when playing it in the arcade.

Ninja Gaiden - Nes

The NES version was utter gash IMO (AVGN even made a vid about it)

There are quite a few Atari Lynx games better than the arcade versions:

Rampage
Super Asteroids / Missile Command
Battlezone
Xenophobe
Ms. Pacman

I think I didn't explain my post to well, I meant homeports which were different to the arcade version (mainly down to technical limitations, or just the choice of the designers) but were actually better games than the arcade version.

With that in mind I add Contra for the Nes to the list.

The PS conversion of Hydro Thunder looked noticeably worse than it did in the arcade, DC or even N64, but it was the only version with a proper championship mode.

Winter Heat - the Saturn version added three extra events, which are some of the most fun in the game.

How good, bad or indifferent Ninja Gaiden on NES was is pretty much a moot point in the context of this thread because it wasn't in any way a conversion of the arcade game. The arcade coin-op was a scrolling beat 'em up but the NES version was to all intents and purposes a platformer.

I totally agree for the record. I never understood why NES programmers nearly always chose to make totally different games that used the same name as an arcade game, especially as 90% of them ended up as awful platformers.
