You really liked New Super Mario Bros.Wii right? The only reason I mention it is I was reading your top games of all time on your blog (assume it's your list?) and it's listed in the Wii section. Doesn't the Wii U one interest you? (forget the price of the console for the moment)
Just a genuine question, curious. For me, the Wii U one is arguably the best of all the 'New' SMB games, especially with the return of the SNES-style world map.

Agreed. In fact I'd say it's the best side scrolling Mario game since Super Mario World, and it's no coincidence that the game pays homage to both that game and Mario Bros 3. I'd recommend it to anyone with a Wii U who likes old school Mario.

£300 is not a lot of money for a brand new console.

The others are only so cheap now because they are 5-6 years old.
Launch consoles are always expensive. Nintendo are still selling at a loss due to the expensive gamepad.

We'll see how much the next PS and xbox are. No doubt they will be more but people wont complain so much.

The PS1 and saturn cost loads more when they were released over 10 years ago.

And no one seems to complain about the ridiculous prices of the i-phone and i-pad.
Please look at my Ebay shop. Specialising in Japanese retro games as well as PAL. All carts cleaned. Always the cheapest too!

£300 is perfectly normal for any new console, only an immature reactionary would claim otherwise.

Especially when owners of either upgrade far more often than with games consoles just to have an 'S' or a new number on the end of the name. £300 is expensive because it's £300, not because the Wii-U isn't worth it.
Retro is a state of mind, and cares not for your puny concepts like dates and calendars.

If I had a spare £300 to drop I'd feel comfortable about buying a Wii U.

Obviously that would have to actually be spare; as in I've bought everything else I'd wanted or needed to get. But I haven't got any outward objection to owning one. In fact the kit looks kind of cool, in a chunky sort of way.

Plus it's a bit of new kit, isn't it? And what's not to like about getting hold of something new? :D

I'd buy one if I had the spare cash but then again I've bought every new console at launch in recent memory.

Only one I've regretted was the 3DS, that was stupid :|

I'm seriously thinking of blowing my whole Xmas bonus on one so I can play ZombiU and Metroid Prime Trilogy in stunning HD... WTF you only live once.

Well, it won't quite be stunning HD in the latter case, as the Wii U will only upscale the 480p video of the original. It appears to do a rather better job of this than most people were expecting though.

Better than the mess of jaggies or Vaseline smeared image that most HDTVs will give you if you leave the upscaling to them, perhaps. However, still no better than you'd get on a good SD set as the underlying resolution is still the same.

Depends what you mean by better. They look slightly sharper and clearer through the Wii U in my experience which is a nice improvement on how they looked on the Wii (where they looked softer/blurrier in my opinion) but at the same time its not close to running the games via the Dolphin emulator on the PC (which look fantastic).
