Loved David Thorpe's work on the Spectrum and huzzah! Kenz to the rescue, wonderous web goodness devoted to just this (and interview with man himself etc) here:

I'm always really impressed by Spectrum screens that work with the attribute clash to come up with something really intricate and colourful. Thorpe was an expert at this. It must have been really frustrating trying to make a colourful image on that machine! I think his Head over Heels one is my favourite.

I've never really understood the popularity of this loading screen. Always felt it looks kind of messy and amateurish, and could have been done much much better.
