Best games by genre - Spectrum

Post by Speedball81 » Fri Nov 11, 2011 6:02 pm

Hi all,

This is my first post having been reading this forum on and off since it began! (I've been a RG reader since discovering Issue 1 back in early 2004 at WHSmith).

I know there are loads of threads about the best games for such and such a system but are there any which organise them into genre (I don't know because I haven't looked) i.e. what you consider to be the best game for each genre on a given system?

Anyway I thought I'd give you my own such list (admittedly incomplete as it only covers genres I actually play) and where else to begin but with the spectrum?...

Action: Robocop
Platform: Manic Miner
Shoot em up: R-Type
Beat em up: Renegade
Driving: WEC Le Mans
Sports: Daley Thompson Decathlon
Text Adventure: The Hobbit
Action Adventure: Skool Daze
Maze: Splat! (my current favourite game)

What do you reckon? (include any of the many genres that I haven't!)

Cheers

Can't really argue with anything suggested so far, some games are hard to pin point to one specific category though. Anyway, here's a quick list off the top of my head. My mind will probably have changed within 5 minutes of posting it!

Action: Robocop
Platform: Starquake
Shoot em up: Xecutor
Beat em up: Target Renegade
One on one fighter: Way Of The Exploding Fist
Driving: Chase HQ
Sports: Hyper Sport
Text Adventure: Seabase Delta
Action Adventure: The Great Escape
Maze: Bobby Bearing
Flight Simulator: Empire Strikes Back (it's the closest to a flight sim that I liked!)
Puzzle: Split Personalities
Adventure: Everyone's a Wally

Yes! My favourite speccy game full stop. So simple, but endlessly replayable. Love it.

Hmmm, what 'genre' would Bomb Jack be categorised as I wonder? It has platforms but I'd hardly call it a platformer. Help!

Arcade is a format, not a genre.

Right, if it has platforms, and you use those platforms in the game, why the hell isn't it a platformer? :?

Arcade is also a genre. It's certainly used as one these days, but pretty much always has been.

That said, I wouldn't particularly use it for one category myself, just throwing it in there.

I prefer to use it as something which divides into sub-genres - for example, Arcade Racer.
