Retro Gamer's Top 25 C64 Games - Your top 25?

Post by ChipTune » Thu Nov 10, 2011 6:44 am

After reading the article this month (NOV 2011). As an original C64 owner I was surprised to see the top 25 containing barely any of the games I loved for that system. In fact the top 25 read like every other top x games list on the internet (of which there are millions).. So I thought I'd add to that pile by giving my top 25. I've always hated Paradroid with a passion but I'm sure some of the games in my list are a bit crap in some people's eyes.. anyways:

Boulderdash
Monty on the Run
Auf Wierdersehen Monty
Creatures
Magic Land Dizzy
Bounder
Pitfall 2
Rick Dangerous
Slightly Magic
Jack The Nipper 2
Switchblade
Summer Camp
Impossamole
Spikey In Transylvania
Wonderboy
Rainbow Islands
Bubble Bobble
Ghouls N Ghosts
CJ's Elephant Antics
Ollie & Lissa 3
Murray Mouse
Knight & Grail
Joe Gunn
Little Computer People

As a C64 fanboy - I thought the mag hit the nail on the head (as they got the results from us lot voting here!)

As for your list- some fantastic games there and some ummmmm real duds!!!!! BOMB JACK in 3rd        The C64 version was not good in comparison with the other 8bit conversions!! (Nice music though).

Agree - I much prefer Bombo (which also got slated)
But then again, I did put Peter Shilton's Handball Maradonna in my list

Each to their own, but Outrun in top 25? (Turbo was far better game), LCP? Never really classed that as a game as such.

Still some good 'uns in your list.

There's no right or wrong top anything, just little surprised to find 2 of the poorer conversions to the C64 (Outrun and Bombjack) held in such high regard.

Mind you as far as list that appeared in RG, Elite would'nt have made it to the 25 either, C64 ver no great shakes.

Apart from the Ben Daglish soundtrack, I'm not a fan of Bombo either... for me the best Bombjack variant on the C64 is Super Seymour Saves the Planet by Codemasters.

Bombjack should have been lower sorry.. I staarted the list 'in no particular order' then changed my mind and forgot to move it.. Will edit now

as for out run, yeah its not a great conversion but it was the first game I played when my Dad bought me my C64 for my 10th birthday so it will always have a place in my heart.. Im sure this goes for everyone in the retro gaming community.. games nostalgia takes over from the actual quality :)

None of them got my vote, and to be honest it looks like any other top 25 floating around the web.... yawn

5 of RGs top 10 were also in my top 10 - I would put Wizball, Armalyte, IK+ and Bubble Bobble in my top 5 for sure, and these were placed 2, 6, 3 and 7 respectively. I think Paradroid was also in my top 10. The only surprise for me was to see Turrican 2 languishing at no. 13. Maybe it reflects the fact that people were moving away from the C64 in the late 80s - the vast majority of the most fondly remembered titles seem to emanate from around 1986-1988, with later classics on the platform such as Mayhem in Monsterland, Turbocharge and the two Creatures games not getting a look in.

Of the other games, I think Stunt Car Racer is a tremendous achievement but playing it today it's obvious that this type of game was very much against the grain for the C64. The Amiga version is obviously better as it has the CPU grunt to do that kind of thing, but as racing games go my vote as far as the C64 is concerned would be for Powerdrift. I don't really share the enthusiasm of the rest of the forum for Barbarian either.

It was a list notable for its almost total lack of more cerebral games - no Bard's Tale, no Guild of Thieves, no Wasteland, no Pool of Radiance, no Ultima. I must admit I didn't vote for them myself, but I expected some of you more sophisticated gamers to do so ...

Ha! Well, I seem to remember you bollocked all of us Wizball-voting sheep at the time. RG's list clearly represents a populist vote rather than a (self-appointed?) connoisseur's one; the list is dominated by quick fix gaming rather than anything more deep and meaningful, and that has its place. Lemon 64's top 25 is more reflective of a "thinking gamer"'s list, but perhaps that is to be expected, given the audience.

#1 IK+
#2 Maniac Mansion
#3 Pirates!
#4 Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
#5 Last Ninja 2
#6 Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
#7 Archon: The Light and the Dark
#8 Elite
#9 Defender of the Crown
#10 Project Firestart
#11 Turrican
#12 Turrican II: The Final Fight
#13 Wasteland
#14 Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
#15 Bubble Bobble
#16 Last Ninja, The
#17 Bruce Lee
#18 Summer Games 2
#19 Winter Games
#20 Impossible Mission
#21 Leaderboard Golf
#22 M.U.L.E.
#23 Laser Squad
#24 Boulder Dash
#25 Creatures 2: Torture Trouble

(The #s are in there because that's how I copied 'n' pasted it and I can't be bothered to edit it all).

One of the more interesting inclusions there is Winter Games, which is my favourite "Games" game ... (although as far as multi-event games go, I'm a bit of a fan of Go for the Gold myself, aka HES Games).

I voted for a bunch of those, but the only pick of mine that made the final list was Leaderboard. Ah well, better than nothing, I suppose.

Me too - I love the Biathlon event. World Games is a close second.

California Games is my least favourite - I only like the Footbag event.
