Darran@Retro Gamer wrote:Played a lot more of this for the review and I really think it's rather average. Respawn points often put you in direct danger, power-ups rarely register when you walk over them, most of the weapons are badly balanced, while the shooting sections are so short they may as well not be there. It's amazingly clunky as well, so you'll use the left trigger to roll into a ball, but must then use up to come out of it. Yes I know it's a nod to Turrican, but it feels clunky and unintuitive today.

I do love the style, I like the focus on exploration, but as with Last Hope, it coming across a nice idea muddled by average game design.

I think you are being a bit harsh by comparing it to todays games. Remember, this game was made for the neo-geo first so it cannot use the DC's full potential. The gameplay is fiddly at first but I found that every time I returned to the game I got better and better and further each time, just what you'd expect from a good retro game. I have completed it now and it felt really rewarding, and I want to go back to it to achieve a better completion rate. I disagree with your comments about the respawn points and power-ups not registering as I have never noticed that happening.

OK its not the best game and I've seen the reviews by other websites and they are way too complementary, but you have to remember, there was only one programmer so I think that's one hell of an achievement. You couldn't get it perfect on your own. Its no Contra, but there arent many alternative platform shoot em up games on the DC so I find it refreshing (especially as it isn't a shmup).
Please look at my Ebay shop. Specialising in Japanese retro games as well as PAL. All carts cleaned. Always the cheapest too!

I've given it 68% it's a decent game with a lot of flaws, just like their previous games. I don't care if it's intended for a neo geo or if only one guy made it. I don't rate games based on system, or the dedication of the person making it. I rate games on how much fun they are and this one feels like a cynical ploy o prey on dreamcast owners. If it was released on live acade no one would give it a second glance. I find the online reviews which basically equate to new dreamcast game = 8/10 quite laughable.
It's a fun through away little game, but that's it for me I'm afraid.

The Turrican series for the Amiga is some of the best for the old system. I had been looking forward to this for some time as it pretty much is a tribute to them. I am enjoying it but it doesn't blow me away at all. Perhaps 75 percent at best for me.

I agree with this soooooooooo much.

Over at my site we recently had somebody sign up and go absolutey mental because I gave a bad review a homebrew game that his friend made. Tried to say that because this guy had been doing it in his own time and putting passion into it that alone should mean at least an 8/10

I told him that I rate a game on enjoyment and just because its a homebrew that isn't going to change, they are open to just the same critique as a commercial game.

I finally cranked this up last night and I must admit I'm quietly impressed with what I've played so far, here are my first thoughts.

1. The default mapping of the controls isn't great on the pad but you can remap all the buttons + it works really well on the Arcade stick.

2. The game owes everything to Turrican, if you're a fan of that series you'll get a lot out of it, it's quite obvious how much is cribbed/paid homage to - level designs, weapons, ball mode.

3. Graphically the game is beautiful with almost every sprite being lovingly designed and rendered, as Darran quite rightly pointed out some of those boss battles are especially impressive.

4. Unlike Turrican this game is structured for a more methodical approach to gameplay with exploration playing a larger part in the makeup of the game than the more arcade tuned blasting of Turrican.

5. As always great music with NG Dev Team releases and a suitably over the top storyline and intro sequence were nice touches.

6. I've already mentioned the Turrican influences but there''s definitely some Contra, Strider, Shadow of the Beast, and even Strider DNA in there too.

Overall I like it and must admit I've not encountered the niggles that a few people have mentioned yet, I must admit that the quality of NG. Dev Team's releases are getting more and more professional with every game and their new shooter NEO XYX is at this early stage looking very impressive - maybe even surpassing the standard of Fast Striker.]

I wish NG Dev. team would have a go at on old school scrolling beat em up, its a genre I really miss.

It is, spent quite a bit of time with this on Saturday and I'm still enjoying it - brutally difficult like any good Turrican game should be!

Great that you're getting good value from your purchase. Loving the artwork, etc, with that CE version. I passed on buying Gunlord as I never really clicked with the original Turrican back in the day. Lovely game and all that but it just wasn't my cup of tea for some reason.
