I don't think I would be comfortable with an "All time" list now, since there's just so many games out there that are superb. Hell, I could rattle off at least 15 on Xbox 360 alone that are worth shooting your granny over!

Trying to multiply that over the various consoles and handhelds (not to mention the PC!) is a mightily daunting task. :(

Go on then.

- Uncharted (PS3). Which sounds like a mega f**king cop-out but I really, really liked these games. Uncharted 1,2 & 3 are the only reasons to own a PS3 IMHO.
- Command & Conquer 3 (PC)
- Ridge Racer (PS1)
- Need for Speed (3DO) And yes, the PC, PS1 and Saturn versions are inferior.
- Resident Evil 1

As of right now, this instant?

-Decap Attack [Mega Drive]
-Sonic The Hedgehog 2 [Mega Drive]
-Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament [Mega Drive]
-Little Big Adventure 2: Twinsen's Odyssey [PC]
-Taiko Drum Master Wii: DoDon & The 2nd Generation!! [Wii]

In any order at all! Also Time Pilot, somewhere amongst them. And Joust.

These are great games. If you like them why is it a cop out? I don't get it.

Looking at people's various lists, I'm left with the question "But why include that edition, when the sequel/prequel is far better?"

I mean, Super Mario Bros on NES? As the best example of it's genre? The ultra-thieving Mario Kart Wii instead of the far superior Super Mario Kart on SNES? Road Rash 1 over the far superior sequel?

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to snark your selections. It's just a legitimate question that comes up every time a "Top X of all time" thread pops up. It's why I said my own list couldn't be anything like how I'd want it to be. :?

Well i presume its because thats the first Mario Kart or Mario Land game they bought, or perhaps they had a NES but then didnt move up to a SNES and instead had a PC or something.

Its like saying why do i love some platforming game (Manic Miner) from 1983 when so many other later platformers have better graphics/sounds/levels etc ?

Nostalgia comes into it a ton. I prefer Super Mario Bros on the NES as it was the first proper Mario platformer, prefer the NES style of graphics than later versions. A lot of later games to me are like 'bimbos', just a splash of colour/graphics (make-up) but it doesnt always add much to it, its all about the gameplay. Thats why i love retro games, often the gameplay is brilliant so i dont care for fancy amazing graphics (If i did might as well get an x-box), all about the gameplay.

Some of us oldies might prefer older versions of games as those were the ones we had as a kid and blew us away (Eg SNES Mario Kart) whereas someone younger might have been 'brought' up on Mario Kart on the Wii.

I'll make it a Top 10:

The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery -- The most captivating adventure experience I've ever had. Great characters
Castle Shikigami 2 -- Best bullethell game I've tried yet
Emerald Mine -- Nice and original puzzle game, great level editor option to challenge friends
Global Agenda -- Original and extremely fun multiplayer experience
Golden Axe -- Just a great beat'em up fantasy classic
Gradius -- My first shooter game ever
Lethal Weapon -- Wonderful soundtrack and unforgiving platformer/shooter
StarCraft -- Great RTS, perfect graphics and loved the level editor
Super Mario Bros. 3 -- 2D platform NES perfection
Traps 'n' Treasures -- An atmospheric pirate platformer

Mario Kart on the SNES is superb, but once you've played the Wii version with a wheel none of the earlier versions feel anywhere near as satisfying. It's as smooth as silk, and about as good as in-person multiplayer gaming gets.

My only real criticism of the Wii version is how miserly Nintendo were with the tracks. There was nothing to stop them putting every track from the series into the game, even as a paid-for extra. Other than that it just feels vastly superior to me. Other than some of the tracks I don't get the argument that the SNES version is better, because to me it simply isn't.

...because this is retro gamer, and picking an uber popular sony franchise seems to cheapen the spirit of the forum - in my own opinion, i am disappointed in myself for now picking a more retro game. :)
