Beat em Ups / Brawlers

Post by speedlolita » Thu Sep 22, 2011 9:57 pm

Was wondering, are there any good obscure ones?

Looking at Shinobi here with some SFC titles a bit. :D

I suggest you take a look at Brawler's Avenue, covers lots of beat-'em-ups and similar games. We're kinda still in early days, though. The member Brawl (not specifically affiliated with the site, just a member) really knows his beat-'em-ups, in terms of gameplay, style, etc.

But since you're mainly looking for names, I can save you some time:

Armoured Warriors
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Captain Commando
Combatribes
Crime Fighters (sequels are Vendetta and Violent Storm)
Denjin Makai
Dynamite Deka
Gaiapolis
God Hand
Golden Axe
Kicker
Light Bringer
Metamorphic Force
Night Slashers
Renegade
River City Ransom
Shinobi
Undercover Cops
Viewtiful Joe
Wild Fang

However, the most underrated brawler of all time is definitely Shadow Force. It plays a bit like a cross between a fighting game and a brawler, with attacks performed with button combinations. You can also possess some enemies and fight as them for a bit - they're less powerful, but at least you don't take damage yourself (unless another enemy comes and whacks you one while you're not paying attention).

^Can concur that Metamorphic Force is a fantastic fighter, most def. a coin guzzler but really slick and fun to play. Add Gaia Crusaders, too, another classy game.

A couple of MAME roms I've been enjoying are 64th Street: A Detective Story and Brute Force. The latter is really weird but lots of fun, feels like football hooligans have taken over the world that 720* and Paperboy take place in, plays like a more responsive, zoomed-out version of Crime Fighters.

MAME-wise, I found a Judge Dredd horizontally scrolling fighter and it is pretty lousy. Never knew it even existed until now.

Also, if you're going down the SFC/SNES route, please avoid the p!ss-awful Iron Commando. It looks REALLY cool in YouTube videos but is one of the horriblest hori beat 'em ups I've played. Despite it looking/sounding sort of authentically Japanese, it's actually by a small Euro team who specialised in faux Jap beat 'em ups (think they did the equally sh!t Legend on SNES, iirc???). It might *look* and *sound* good, but it plays very 'Euro' indeed (the worst type of 'Euro' imaginable).

If you want a different kind of side scroll beat em up - the two D&D games on the arcade systems were really good (Tower of Doom and Shadows over Mystara, not sure on the first one's name being correct, 2nd one defo is!) Highly enjoyable with lots of collectables, different routes, character classes and almost side quests! Very impossible to 1 cc though!

Get yourself on Hot Blooded Family or whatever the hell it's supposed to translate as - it's on PS1 and Saturn, made by Tecnosoft and is basically just a nuts Streets of Rage style game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjBmp8hglFk

Try Shinobi X on the saturn

I would love a photo realistic scrolling beat em up on the modern consoles

agreed. i really like this crazy game.

Also have you seen the Streets of Rage Remake?
I have it on PC but now also i have it on the original Xbox. Its an uber cool remake and one of the finest slices of homebrew ive ever played. It includes all three games and many many cool features.
Check it out. :D

Ahh...brawlers: one of my all time favourite genres. Renegade on ZX Spectrum was probably a first next-gen experience for me ever ;)

Forgot the name, but there was a couple on Dreamcast I liked and I thought pretty obscure- one with zombies I think?
Also heard of something called Kenka Bancho Badass Rumble for PSP which is supposed to be a brawler.

In other news Fighting Force just got released on PSN.

Sega ages Dynamite Dekka is well worth a buy.
Just for the amount of extra modes (Golden axe mode?)

Plus in one mode it lets you play as SEGATA SANSHIRO!!

Scrolling beat 'em ups is still my favourite genre. As for under rated ones:

Legionaire in the arcades is excellent, can play it on Mame.

Growl and Mystical Fighter on the Megadrive/Genesis are pretty obscure but both pretty decent.

Mutant Rampage Bodyslam on the Philips CDi not only has possibly the best name ever but also rather good.
