I had Cascade 50 which I got from a charity shop for a couple of quid and all the games were terrible beyond belief.

An RG feature on that would be superb!

I recently picked up Cassette 50 for the Speccy. I didn't realise there were other ones. The games are truly terrible, far worse than the BASIC type-in stuff you used to get in books and magazines.

I'd forgotten about Don't Buy This. The DBT games aren't as bad as the shoddy BASIC games on Cassette 50, but they are still pretty terrible. You can get the games from WOS if you want to try them in an emulator. Though be warned, the .TZX file is a sampling of the entire cassette so you will have to load from it one game at a time.

I remember seeing one of the sixth-formers at my school demonstrating Fido to the head of computing - I assumed it was the student who wrote it.

They're two cassettes that would probably be considered 'collectible' because of their reputation. Cassette 50 is fairly common but Don't Buy This is rarer. They're not going to feature on anyone's list of favourite games though.

Absolutely!

As long as you set your standards VERY low the odd game on Cassette 50 can be a bit of a laugh to play.

Don't Buy this on the other hand is horrible! Only that annoying Racing game was even remotely payable & that was because there was a bit of a challenge getting your head round the (deliberately) bloody annoying controls.

I have played DBT briefly. It really is that awful!

Guru Larry did a great review on it, which accurately describes just how bad it is: http://youtu.be/q3KQUnoqukY

At least DBT was tongue in cheek!

If you go into it with the foreknowledge that they are awful it does soften the impact.

At least C50 the games are short loads & there's some variety on there and the anticipation of what's next? keeps you amused for an hour or two as you plough through them.

On DBT the Weasel Willy game is broken beyond belief, the Fruit Machine is a waste of loading time & electricity, the racing game is frustrating & the Fido games are er, terrible.

I find the games on C50 rubbish, but disposable fun, I find the games on DBT without any redeemable features whatsoever.

Cassette 50 was so bad that when one of our pool of home tapers bought it, I didn't even bother with a copy.

A rare instance where I could genuinely say 'I could do better than that'.

Four of the games on the tape are indeed atrocious, but I actually quite like Race Ace. It looks terrible, it's difficult to get to grips with the controls, and most of the speeds are unplayable. However, it actually does reward a bit of persistence. A little known fact is that Tony Rainbird, boss of Firebird at the time, wrote it himself as well as the rather more popular Run Baby Run.

So far as the Cassette 50 goes, the one good game on it is the Frogger clone. Well, it's not fantastic or anything, but at least it looks like the work of more than an afternoon.

It wasn't any better than the listings for Frogger clones that were standard fare in the mags at the time, so it didn't really warrant a purchase.

For what it's worth, the game was also published as a listing in Your Computer.

That was probably the better way to acquire it, although you wouldn't get a calculator watch that way.

You're missing the point a little. The Cassette 50 games were all hokey BASIC games. Frogger, Space Invaders, Pac Man etc could be reasonably replicated in BASIC with relatively short listings so we'd had our fill of those in the very early days of owning our computers via the various type ins (I have fond memories of creating new mazes and AI for a BASIC Pac Man clone on my Oric).

They were no comparison to the many slickly coded commercial offerings which Cassette 50 was trying to imply it matched.

You're perhaps too young to fully grasp just what it was like back then.
