Is there such a thing as a good looking N64 game?

Post by Neilos626 » Mon Sep 12, 2011 4:30 pm

Dusted off the N64 today after many years and was suprised by just how terrible the graphics were on all of the games I played (56)!

All the games look so dull and washed out with muddy colours and uninspired design, not one vibrant or colourfull game.

Were there any good looking 2d games released? IIRC Yoshi's Story is 2d, but don't remember it looking great.

I find Disneys Magical Tetris a bright fun, lively soundtrack game on the N64, I know its not pushing the boundaries, but no 3D shapes in sight!!
WANTED: ANY SNES or GAMEBOY GAMES, OR EMPTY BOXES, INSTRUCTION MANUALS or WHITE INNER TRAYS, going for FULL SETS of both.

This is of course a subjective opinion, but I think most games of this era, especially the 3d ones, look kinda crappy. Some of them still play great, but graphics are in my opinion a low point of the PS1/N64 era. No surprise that the best looking games from this era are still sprite based ones (or a combination of 2d and CGI).

Unfortunately, the N64 mostly had nothing BUT 3d games and as such many of them look like misshapen origami foldings.

I would say Mischief Makers looks reasonably polished though.

Ogre Battle 64 also features some OK sprites.

The problem is that the N64 had a habit of making even sprites look kinda muddy and blurry.

Not if you have a PAL console. Ugh no RGB really kills the N64!

With RBG..

World Driver Championship, Zelda, Banjo, Starfox and F-Zero (for the smoothness!) are all solid looking.

trouble is both the ps1 and saturn had some stunning looking 2d platformers, shmups and fighters. Nothing like this on the n64, I have clayfighter 63 1/3, which is mostly 2d and it looks shocking.

Game like Goemon and Zelda have huge draw distances which is not common on the PS1 and Saturn. Textures were a big problem on the N64 though.

Mischief Makers is a lush 2D game as is Yoshis Story.

Clayfighter is just a terrible game, all copies should be erased from existance!

Like Nakamura said, it's all down to the cable you use, RGB isn't a option on PAL N64s, S-Video is though and it makes a world of difference...

I use S-Video on my NTSC N64 and the colours are vibrant enough for me not to bother sorting out RGB for it.

Agreed (especially with a PAL modded S-Video cable which fixes the brightness issues of a standard S-Video cable).

Regardless....i still don't like the N64 much (even though i have 4 of them  )
