IGN posted a question on their Facebook page.....
"The hardest game ive ever completed is:"
The answers showed the age of the average facebook user.....lots of next and current gen titles were mentioned......
Me? I went for Treasure Island Dizzy (C64). That game consumed my life, and took me months to work out all the stuff to do, but I completed it!
What nails games have you guys aced without cheating?
NB - If anyone says the NES Ninja Gaiden games, then you have my utmost respect (if your not lying that is!!)

A few spring to mind - Hellfire, Gaires, Gynoug - all on 1 credit on megadrive.
In recent times Bayonetta on the top difficulty, modern warfare 2 spec ops on veteran
And coincidently I figured out all of dizzy 1 on my own

Easier to ask me what are the games I've completed without cheating - there aren't many!
Can't remember completing too many arcade style games without continues (other than sports related) so I'd probably plump for
The Double
and
Mugsys Revenge
both of which I've heard are tricky to complete

Megaman & Bass (Rockman & Forte) springs to mind. Probably the hardest of the classic Megaman series especially the final two stages, made harder by the fact that you don't get any energy tanks in the game.
Contra/Super C on the NES. Both are pretty tough at the outset but I did manage to clear both without the Konami code with a lot of practice.

I've managed to clear NG1 on the NES. Final level is an utter censored as is the 3 phase final boss but with enough patience it is (just about) doable!

I've beaten Ninja Gaiden NES too; one of the very few games I've completed on that console, actually.

It's Godhand for me; all the early games I played were too tough for me. Including Treasure Island Dizzy!

Ghouls n' Ghosts and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts probably being the most unforgiving game ive ever finished.
Beat all 3 Ninja Gaiden games on the nes and snes but I wouldnt call the 1st Ninja Gaiden a tough game, quite relaxing to just run through it.
That glorious b*stard before Mr X.

Ghouls n ghosts (series) are without a doubt the toughest games that I completed without save states etc
This was due to not owning many games at the time, and having to get the most out of them. A golden age.

I've beaten Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on the NES. Apparently they're pretty tough.

Respect on Ninja Gaiden 2 that games and nightmare on Hard mode.
For me probably Call Of Duty 3 on Veteran. That level where you've got to cross the road and assault the hill with the two mortar positions on it, my god that took me weeks to find a route through that didn't result in instant death. Funny thing was though first try i ran straight through everything without being hit and got to the mortar pit but got killed by a random grnade with one barrier left to destroy with the mortar. Treyarch games eh

Back to The Future 3 on C64, tough but not as tough as the Retro Shamer article would have you believe, and nowhere near bad enough to be a Retro Shamer, average game maybe but far from terrible...
Zorro on Atari 800XL.... how the hell did I find my way through those catacombs when I was a kid??? tried recently and got hopelessly lost and frustrated, tbh it's a pretty easy game up to the point where you climb down the grave....
Star Wars on NES, yet another game I breezed through when I was younger... nowadays... no chance

Tough call, but I think it was probably Lemmings on the SNES, including the Sunsoft Bonus 5 levels.
