What retro hardware have you acquired for free?

Post by GarryG » Wed Sep 07, 2011 6:02 am

A post I recently made on another thread got me thinking. I’ve got a fair few prices of retro kit for free over the years.
So what freebees have you got, and what’s your best non-purchase?

I’ve got a Mac Classic and BBC model B (complete with Cummana double disk drive and Cub monitor) from one on my first jobs, back in the day!

I was also given SEGA MegaDrive with the 3D game built in, complete with 3D Goggles (which were subsequently loaded and got lost, broken I think!) and light-gun.

Later on I, from a different workplace, was asked if I wanted an old SUN Spark 10 that was being retired… I did!

As well as all this I’ve acquired an Atari Lynx, two Game Boys, two SEGA Master Systems, an Amiga 600, a GameCube, a PS2, a Nintendo 64, three PS1s, two old PC laptops and five old PC desktops, a Dreamcast, oh and two iPods.

Well I haven't paid for much of my hardware, considering I could a load of it for christmas. But I was pretty chuffed to get a Megadrive 2, 2 controllers and 2 games for free the other week of my friend.

My best non-purchase would probably be Conker's Bad Fur day which I borrowed off of a friend years ago and haven't really seen him since :|
Chazz it up!!!

My brother was given an Atari 2600 with a load of boxed games, which he passed onto me.

My current DOS PC is built entirely out of free stuff people have given me. It's a bit of a frankenstein really, built from bits of donated PCs.

Sadly, that's it.

A Gamecube off my younger brother, which is the main system I now collect games for. It also single-handedly got me back into games when I found it in a storage box about two years ago. I know he's got a PS2 sitting around with a load of games, but I'm biding my time on that one!

An N64 (plus games and controllers) off my mate a few months ago.

My uncle also gave me his NES in about 1990, but I eventually had to give it back to him. My cousin (his son) now has it under the TV in his lounge!

Probably the oldest is a ZX81 from a my brothers next door neighbour, had the keyboard mod and what appeared to be an analog joystick :?

Also in the box was a BBC with a couple of disc drives and a scart lead, which was nice.

Strangest was a Light Gun with a PC 15pin? joystick connection not sure if any games support it.

Obviously all well past the sell by date on them, but great nevertheless

Atari 2600 jr. Ended up flogging it at a car boot - I felt bad but I'd long since lost touch with the guy who gave it to me. Otherwise I'd have given him a cut of the takings.

2 Master Systems and a few games - Rocky, Double Dragon and Black Belt.
A Game Boy Pocket I found in a shed.
2 Dual Shock 2s (one was broken though) and a PS2 memory card.

Not as much as some people, but if it's free you can't complain.

I got my Playstation and my Gameboy for nothing. Not that I ever play them.

2 Playstations, one slim and the other original model. Both came with the box, leeds and a few games. Perfect. ;)
