Stand out moments

Post by crusto » Mon Jun 27, 2011 6:55 pm

You know, when you are playing a game and something happens to make you think "wow, that was superb" I've got to see that again, Ive got to show someone else! Theres been loads over the years but what ones were special to you?

For me, off the top of my head.

1. When the "beast" first snarls at you in another world.
2. When ifrit bursts out of the ground in ff7
3. When you get to play with the revolver in HL2 for the first time, and you blow the guard right back through the door he just came in through.
4. When that huge boulder rolled (er, jerked) on to the screen in drunken master.
5. Scoring my first perfectly worked goal on pro evo 2 and being able to see it again and again.

Level 3 from RType on the Speccy. After a decade of gaming,I thought I'd seen it all until that moment.

The introduction of Mode 7, which I first witnessed in F-Zero. It was later used in Axelay, Contra III, Super Mario Kart and few other games.

The first time I saw the killer whale chasing my avatar "toward me" in Sonic Adventure.

Marvelling at the parallax scrolling in StarRay (Atari ST) that first time thinking, "HOW MANY layers? Too many to count!"

Saving wonder-goal replays to disk on Kick Off 2 to show to friends!

First witnessing the magnificent use of colour with no noticeable attribute clash in Light Force (Speccy).

Playing Uridium and thinking, "This is the coolest game ever!"

My eyes nearly bleeding the first time I played the wonder that is Tempest 2000 on Jag.

The first time I ever saw OutRun and Star Wars (Atari version) in the arcades and standing there open-mouthed at how earth-shatteringly great they looked. That experience played a large part in for why I still to this day rate Sega and Atari so highly despite their lows over the years.

When you see Ares going to town in the first God of War on the PS2 honestly didn't think it was possible for games consoles to do stuff like that, especially one that's now over 10 years old.

When I was playing Killzone 2 when it first came out I actually paused the game to go get my housemate just to show him the graphics. The level on the train when all the canvas is blowing in the wind, looks amazing

Playstation intros to Omega Boost and Soul Blade.
Lots of parts from the latter half of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath - your treatment and escape from the rival bounty hunters, coming across the D-Day like beach assault, and just paddling through the abandoned city in the caves upriver.

Where do I are a few

Seeing the 3d graphics in Knight Lore.
Upon loading Saboteur II on my 128k Spectrum the music started and it was so cool! Up until then my 48k just beeped.
Seeing the Intro to Shadow Of The Beast II on my Amiga. It was like watching a movie - too bad the gameplay sucked.
Playing Duke Nukem on the PC and being blown away by the 3d graphics - never experienced anything like that. Alien Breed 3d on the Amiga 1200 was close but it was stuttery.
Playing Vice City and the first time I got into a car Steppin Out came on the radio after an advert, that was when I knew there was something special about this game.
The city graphics in GTA IV - so life like. Well to me anyway.

Most of mine are from the SNES....

Seeing Street Fighter 2 on the SNES for the first was the first time I felt that home gaming had finally caught up to arcade gaming, and that the time of arcades was probably coming to an end.

Super Castlevania 4...near the end of stage 4 I think it is, where the whole corridor spins around you in Mode 7. I was completely blown away by that first time I saw it.

Firing up Donkey Kong Country 2 for the firs time....Donkey Kong Country had seemed impressive, but this was way above it. I never would've thought those kind of visuals were possible on a 16 bit machine.

Seeing Starfox up and running for the first time, it was so far ahead of the competition it was unreal.

Getting to the first boss (Burt the Bashful) on Yoshi's Island and getting a taste of just what was in store for me for the rest of the game thanks to the Super FX chip :)
