E3 and the origins of gamepads and stuff

Post by Crunchy » Mon Jun 06, 2011 5:22 am

Commence the fanboy debate about who has "won" E3 here.

And let's see plenty of that "OMG what a crappy lineup from (insert either Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft here)".
It just never gets old.

And lets have some discussion about where the stuff we take for granted today really came from, eh? Why not!? Especially gamepads and motion control.

An argument about Nintendo would just be gravy.

Don't let me down.

This months GAMEStm done a nice 2-pager on 10 Cringeworthy E3 moments (From shows gone by).

Personal fav, has to be Sony, E3 2006: Genji:Days Of The Blade producer banging on about the level of realism in the game including real-time weapon changes, famous battles which auctually occured in ancient Japan and then a giant Crab appears.

Also MS in 2009 with the Milo And Kate Project Natal demo-Here we are 6 months into 2011, best Kinnect has to offer? Children Of Eden-Great game i'm sure but not quite Milo And Kate in terms of something outside the box.

Wonder what this year will offer in terms of face palm moments? Most of the games to be annouced seemed to have been leaked weeks ago, Apple ignoring E3 holding show of their own, so E3 just more smoke and mirror tactics for myself-'Winner' probably who threw most money at it i guess.

It's all smoke and mirrors... the really innovative and original games never get a look in at E3, it's all about the marketing dollars.

Judging by the standard of the hardware manufacture from Microsoft when they hit the market early with the 360 to beat their competitors I'd therefore expect the Xbox 1440's casing to be held together by elastic bands with the chipset hanging out the back on a piece of stripboard. I just hope they've beefed up customer support for the "small number of failures" we're likely to see.

I'm only really interested in Nintendo's E3 offering (as I only have Nintendo consoles this gen), but I fear it won't be as good as last year's output. I think Nintendo raised the bar too high with DKC Returns, GoldenEye, Epic Yarn and 3DS all in a oner.

In a way I disagree, in terms of simply wetting the appetite I think Nintendo will have a lot to show. Whether they can make good on all those promises is another thing, I'm still waiting for Donkey Kong Racing for the Gamecube.

Last year they showed a lot of top games to come out that year, so we didn't have to wait. This time there may only be one or two big surprises for the Wii and 3DS respectively that we'll actually see on shelves this year.

However in the long term, with the Project Cafe especially, I expect them to tease a lot of games (even if that just includes naming expected franchises without specifics) for 2012, the Cafe's launch and beyond.

Microsoft kicks off at 5pm Brit-time, Sony start at 1am Brit-time, and Nintendo tomorrow at 5pm Brit-time.

Don't know about the others. I might match Microsoft's conference because it's the only one I can.

Edit: I've seen some site reporting Microsoft starts at 6pm Brit-time. :?

The debate over which company 'wins' is often mute though..

Cast your minds back to E3 2000. Pre-Show?It was supposed to be Sonywho'd steal the show with PS2, yet it only had MGS2 to save it's arse.

Sega by comparison 'stole' the show with US price cut for DC, games such as Quake 3, Virtua Tennis, Shenmue, MSR, Half-Life, JSR, PSO, F355 on display.

Did'nt help the DC in the long run though, did it?
