Normally I'd agree, but these two are pretty much identical right down to the poll options. Can't they get merged?

Yay, another poll to click on.

I really got bored out of my skull playing FF VII - it's just so soul-destroying wandering around waiting for the right bit of cheesy dialogue that lets you move on. And its default speed for displaying text assumes a reading age of about 6. Menu-driven battling on a console is dreadfully corny, and chucking you into them at random should be banned under the Geneva convention as a form of psychological torture.

Zelda games, from about the SNES/GB onward, have hit a great balance of action vs. storytelling.
I've tried playing Alundra - that just went on and on with none of the promise of great hidden secrets that Zelda plays up so well to keep you interested.
And I've tried Secret of Mana, which is a great game, but I'm often caught out by its reliance on game-saving and having to repeat so much when you die.

Oh, and to answer the question... Skyward Sword could be the shot in the arm the series needs. The basic game mechanics don't seem to have evolved much, but the switch to real time combat rather than button mashing could really make this version of Zelda stand out.

I do love Zelda, though. Over the last couple of years I've played through WW, LTTP, OOT and I'm about halfway through MM. I have the original NES games but while they were doubtless brilliant in their day they've not aged as well as the 16-bit iteration.

I get the Zelda love every Thursday evening when I can 1-800-DIALAWHORE on my telephone.....I'm in for a treat tonight then :p

On a more serious note, Zelda is never going to be in my top ten games ever, none of them, but I do see the love and they are IMMENSELY fantastic for what they are. OoT may not be a 98% game now cos it's still the same thing, but I'm sure it's worth at least 90%...

I understand that people use the phrase "meh!" to sum up what I feel about Zelda and similar games. Never played one, nothing I've heard or seen of them convinces me that I should try to.

Plenty more gaming genres to pick from.

I also feel the same way about beat-em-ups released after, say, Exploding Fist and IK+. All this button-combo nonsense and hurling fireballs about - tripe.

Mark.

Yes. Very keen on the series. I see why some may feel they're overrated but I'd still say Ocarina is worth every bit of that 98%, for its design.

If there are any other Action-RPG series' that are just as good, I'd like to know about them so I can play them. I've tried the Fables, Oblivions and so on, all well crafted but nowhere near as playable.

Zelda is not a RPG :?

Regardless though, I love the series. Link's Awakening is probably my favourite, with LTTP and Ocarina coming in at a close 2nd & 3rd.

Mozza - try Beyond Good & Evil :)

Yes it is. It's just not a boring one!

But yep, Beyond Good & Evil is the best of the alternatives. Secret of Mana is pretty good if you're happy with the stylings of the SNES. The original Adventures of Alundra on the PS1 is a similar thing, but more pseudo-3D-game and less story.
