GBA SP 101 vs 001 comparison

Post by nakamura » Thu May 12, 2011 4:55 pm

For those that are interested here is a comparison of the GBA SP 101 that was launched in 2006ish. It comes with a 2 level backlit screen as opposed to the poor on or off front lit screen of the 001.

So, here is are both machines set to low level light, in the 001 case, light off.

Here is the 001 light on and the 101 light on low. Difference is already massive.

Now both consoles set to bright.

Now showing Mario Kart on the 001 with light on.

Now on the 101 with light on low.

And finally light on high.

As you can see the 101 is so much better than the 001. The screen is wonderfully vivid in person. Any serious GBA fan should own one as it is the perfect machine. Plays both GBA and GB games in wonderful vivid colour.

Note I had to move the camera away for the Mario Kart bright shot as it just came out as a blurry mess.

8-)

Nice! I always forget how inferior the original SP screen was, second iteration is a massive improvement. Looking back, Nintendo messed up so bad with GBA screens. Still got a lot of time for my famicom micro though 8)

Yep, I looked up the comparisons on Youtube a few days ago and it's pretty huge. I'm getting a 101 very soon. Micro is good but the SP looks a lot better. 8)

EDit: Oh yeah, I've never used an SP so how is the D-pad? It looks a little bit awkward to use, that's one thing the Micro does have, very nice D-pad.

Well I haven't played anything like Street Fighter yet but I find the whole machine a joy to use. It feels so light and responsive and there is so little play on the D-pad. Shoulder buttons are obviously close but just a slight hand position adjustment and they are excellent.

For people who like GB, GB Colour and GBA it is the perfect machine. An essential purchase.

^Unluckily, I've only got a 001 Tribal, though it was a quid. The screen is gash, all washed out, though I love how the machine feels and it fits brilliantly in my work uniform's trouser pockets.

How common are 101s in the UK, I'd deffo pick one up if they're cheapish?

^Is it easy to check the difference between models, 'cos I'm always browsing the market/car boot sale/charity shop/Cash Converters/Cash Generator types of places and semi-regularly stumble across dirt-cheap SPs (8 times out of 10 usually being the Tribal edition!) God knows how many 101s I might've passed up...

There is no actual confirmation of a UK release. The model number is clearly on the back of the machine though, Ill do a pic in the morning if you want. The euro versions came in light blue, tribal and pink.

^Cheers for the offer, don't go to the hassle, just Googled it and it seems straightforward enough.

I remember someone mentioning the Zelda Minish Cap SP being the backlit 101 edition, don't know if that's true or not???

Damn it guys! I didn't even know about the 101. I've got 3 SPs (black, Mario red, tribal) and they're all 001.

I now NEED a 101. Recommendations of where to get one from?

I just goes to show how poor the original GBA's screen was, it just doesn't do justice to how colourful some of it's games are. It makes me wonder why developers even bothered to make their games look nice when they were originally intended for a system that couldn't show them off properly.

I find the SP-001 is decent enough, but usually I'll play my GBA games on the Gameboy Player or my DS Lite. Tracking down a decent condition 101 just doesn't seem worth it to me while I have those alternatives.
Pratty's trade list, updated (May 2019)!
