Best MAME Shmups ?

Post by ChipTune » Thu May 05, 2011 6:11 pm

After getting Deathsmiles on XBOX and falling in love with the bullet hell genre, and rekindling my love of shooters in general.. I decided to but an X-Arcade stick so I could use MAME and simulate the arcade experience in my home.. and what a great buy it was.. playing with that stick rules, and takes me back to my younger days of hanging around in arcades playing wonderboy and final fight..

Anyway I have quite a few shmups on MAME... the best Ive found so far are 1944, Raiden, Prehistoric Isle, and best of all DoDonPachi Dao-Ou-Jou (another great bullet hell game by Cave)

Could you guys recommend other bullet hell games, CAVE shooters, and similar titles (Arcade) that can be played on MAME..

Thanks

Salamander 2 is a personal fav of mine. Sequel to Life Force on the NES which is known as Salamander in Japan.

1944's excellent, and I realy like 19XX as well (even though that one got a bit of a slapping when the series was featured in the mag!).
Other MAME favourites of mine are Blazing Star, Tengai, Dimahoo, Mars Matrix, Twinkle Star Sprites (a bit different and cutesy but great) - and of course you can't go wrong with the good old R-Type series

They're maybe not as bad as they seem,
Cos in a world full of misery, with hatred and greed,
Your problems are another man's dream.

Boogie Wings/The Great Ragtime Show - A completely bonkers shmup from Data East, it has a unique weapon- the Sky Hook, which can drop bombs and latch on to enemy fighters so you can hurl them at each other- and the fight doesn't end once you're plane's down, as you continue on-foot and can steal extra vehicles include planes, tanks and elephants. Also has a boss fight where you battle an evil Santa Claus.
Legit Home Ports - NONE : (

XEXEX - Konami took a look at R-Type and thought, 'We can do better than that', and this is the result. It's got a few twists of its own (like several extra weapons, a charge attack that assaults the enemy with tentacles, and some Gradius-style stages that scroll vertically for infinity) but while it's obviously inspired by R-Type, this is one of Konami's best shmups. Beware- the US version changes things, stripping out all the additional weapons, rapid fire and bringing in an energy bar rather than one-hit kills.
Legit Home Ports - PSP (as part of Salamander Portable)

X-Multiply - A biological horror shmup developed by Irem, the weapon here is a pair of indestructible tentacles that move as you move, which have a lot of uses (mostly killing things by brushing them against enemies). Learning how to use them effectively is massively important, as even when you get the hang of them, the game is quite difficult (but this is Irem, what were you expecting?).
Legit Home Ports - PS1/Saturn (as part of Arcade Gears: Image Fight/X-Multiply)

Life Force and Salamander aren't quite the same. The main difference is the power ups, each uses a totally different system (though has the same weapon selection).

Salamander has long been a favourite, but the League introduced me to Time Pilot 84. Superb game, extremely playable and full of that 'one more go' factor.

Actually the power up system was modified from the Arcade version when they ported it to the NES/Famicom.

Time Pilot '84 is a great game for sure!

They're distinct arcade releases. Japan and Europe had Salamander, US had Life Force, then the latter was released in Japan with its new title and the revised power up system.

Not bullet hell but I think they are better than Cave's offerings:

Dimahoo
Battle Garegga
Terra Diver/Soukygurentai
Gunbird 1/2
Gunlock/Rayforce
Sengoku Blade: Sengoku Ace Episode II/Tengai
Armed Police Batrider

Or better still Forgotton Worlds, though probably best to stick to the cab version of that, the controls have never translated well.
