This might be old news, but earlier this month, Sega announced that it would release a slightly-upgraded version of the first title in the Sonic universe for the Game Boy Advance during the middle of next month. Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis will feature a save option and extra spin attack abilities from the sequels. It only confirmed to be released in North America at present.

And for only near twice the price of the Sonic Mega Collection on every other format!

& I thought the NES classics range was a pretty blatant attempt at money grabbing...

Yeah, the extras will make it easier, no doubt, but I like that they're introducing it again. It will reintroduce the platformer to a bunch of new folks.
But, yeah, you can also view it as Sega trying to cash-in.
