Sega Master System games on the Arcade Ultimate Portable

Post by FrostbiteBailey » Sun Mar 27, 2011 6:40 pm

Hi eveyrone,

I've just had my Sega Mega Drive Arcade Ultimate Portable from Blaze through. The "instructions" that came with it are completely useless and I am utterly clueless when it comes to downloading games (I've had my Wii for years now and not once have I ever connected it to the Net and downloaded a game for it from the virtual console because I have no idea where to even begin).

Does anyone know where I can download games to play on the SD card it came with the Blaze console and what file format they have to be in?? I've seen ones with .sms and .7z etc. but they don't work on the console :(

I've done some Google searches but not found a website with a good selection of games for download in a format the console can play.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers folks,
Steve

Sorry Steve, but we're not allowed to point people in the direction of illegal downloads round these parts.

Are you sure it can play Master System games?

Have you tried any downloaded Mega Drive games on it?

The official download site has instructions for transfer here:
http://www.mugaatgames.net/How_to_Download.html

That tells us your files need to be in .BIN format.

There's no mention of Master System compatibility, only Mega Drive.

By the way .7Z is a compressed file much like .ZIP. You need to install 7ZIP to decompress the files within (not that it'll help if you've downloaded games for the wrong system).

It doesn't play Master System games. I have tried!

They must be in .BIN format and must be saved to the /GAME folder on the SD card. Only MegaDrive games will work - no 32X, MCD, SMS, etc.

If your..., er..., "method of obtaining ROMs" gives you .GEN files, these are fine to be renamed as .BIN - however, if they are .SMD, they are in a specialised interleaved format. I'm sure a quick search on your favourite engine will give you a program to convert from .SMD to .BIN, though.

Thanks for the info, folks :D

Sadly, I'm no closer to understanding how to download genuine MD games (legitimately, of course) and the "how to download" part of At Games website is rubbish. They'll also only be offering new games for download, not MD ones, so this console seems to have been a complete waste of money.

Can anyone recommend a generic handheld that allows you to install a variety of emulators and games?

Cheers,
Steve

Probably because its not entirely legit at all, except for the odd homebrew game. The vast majority of real MD games are tied up in copyright and licensing (especially since they keep knocking out compilations etc for modern machines) so downloading those takes you to the darker side of the internet.

Once you've got them, its not difficult at all. No matter what system you bought, you'd face the same issue sourcing games.

Stick with it, its not difficult.

I have had some success with .smd files as well.....

You simply download a .bin game and copy it to the sd card that has already been in the blaze (take it out and link it to a pc via sd card reader) copy the .bin file to the GAME folder on the card and then pop the sd card back in the blaze and scroll right until it says sd card then press start and the game should be listed....press start again to play the game (not all games work so try a few)

I am of course referring to homebrew games and demos and in no way mean previously released games

I wouldn't be too worried about the legitimacy of downloading ROMs, I mean plenty of people get away with bunging them on discs and flogging them on eBay! 8)
As long as you don't blab to some Sega bigwig, you won't get in any trouble. And if you're still bothered about getting caught, just get a browser add-on that disables your proxy! 8) 8) 8)

Its amazing how many emulator discs there are on Ebay, emulators and roms of all old skool systems, cant understand why people would buy them, its so easy to make your own, and if your a bit stuck there are planty of guides on the internet, plus useful people here in these forums. I made a SNES disc for my dreamcast, took me about 5 attempts like due to the dreamcast been an awkward machine, but i got there in the end!
This week i av mostly been playing dreamcast

Convenience mostly.

Having spent many hours over many months gathering random roms for MAME, I eventually realised I could spend just a few quid and save myself a lot of time and effort. That time/effort saving has repeatedly paid off over several PC rebuilds and new purchases, as installing MAME is as easy as copying the files off my full set of discs.

It may not be the most up to date and accurate version, but I know its there and all my favourites work just fine. It cost less than a couple of pints. Well worth it.

I do the same - I've tried to burn my own discs, particularly for the Dreamcast, and failed miserably every time. And my hard drive is pretty small so I prefer to store them on other media. I recently paid £3 for two DVDs with 8000 games - hardly a rip off!

I've had a Dingoo A320 for a couple of years now and that plays loads of emulators, it's mostly best for 8bit and 16bit systems, I don't think it can handle N64 or Saturn or beyond. But for Megadrive, SMS, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance stuff it's been great.

It's been superseced by the A330 now and you might also want to look at things like the GP2X Wiz or GP2X Caanoo.

I know this is an old tread but could I get some help with the system recognising my SD card? I've had it awhile now but only just got it out to use it and I've done everything right but either the games on the SD card don't show up or I get the message Fail To Read Game.

I can't find much help on the Internet apart from a few other people having the same problem. I've tried different SD cards and I've put the card in the system first before putting into PC like it says but the Game folder doesn't automatically get created.

What brand and data size cards have other people used or is there something wrong with it?

Any help would be appreciated thanks
