How long do you think game development takes?

Post by GigaPepsiMan » Sun Mar 27, 2011 12:00 pm

This is something that is getting to me lately because most people think it is an easy job.
For example a debate I have had recently when talking about 3DS. There are people who believe that making for example a remake of Majoras Mask for 3DS would be a simple task that would take about 12-18 months to make because the game engine already exists (OOT3DS) and that they would have no need for artists, or story boards or writers (because it is a remake) they also believe that such a job wouldn't be hard because there would be someone to cover everything (Which I doubt there will be because nintendo development teams are small).

Anyway my counter argument is that they would need artists and they would need writers and that making a game off an existing engine wouldn't be as simple as say making a custom map for a PC game.
Personally if it is zelda then it tends to take around 2 years to do.

Anyway who thinks it is a quick easy process and who thinks it really is tiem consuming and difficult?

Depends on the game...These days not uncommon to see numerous developers working on 1 game.Ie 1 doing the Single Player game, another handling the online game. This i'd wager reduces time as each team focusing on their set tasks.

In answer to main points raised, think reason people think it's easy process-Lazy HD ports, buggy code, followed by numerous patches, does kinda create feeling a lot of games are just thrown together.Of course, game development is a long (and costly) process. The bigger the game, the more time and resources required.

Developer also under immense pressure from publisher i'd guess, to get it done in time for planned launch, or the big buying season or so it does'nt clash, release date wise with another big name title.

And if it's a Hideo Kojima game....Game say 18 months. Then 3 years to do the cutscenes, codec scenes and then the cut scenes for the cut scenes...

Talking of movie games, have heard of development time of less than 6 months in few cases..

I'd hazard that while games are getting much much much bigger they're also getting quicker. In rational terms at least.

Buying a game engine off the shelf (and Audio, physics, and dynamic lighting plugins) much cut a huge chunk of Dev time. Certainly more than it'd otherwise take to code these engines from scratch. Obviously they need to tune the engines to their exact requirements, but I'd imagine it's not as hard as it sounds. Wiki's lists of game engines and middleware is quite astonishing. There's certainly money to be made providing tools!

That being said the enormous list of people to "thank" at the end of most games credits seems to point at some monstrously difficult logistical nightmare. Then again mags like EDGE are always falling over themselves to point out just how much of the games are being farmed out to 3rd Party sources such as Art render farms and audio specialists. That's a lot of concurrent time saving as well.

So, MONSTER game franchises like CoD can happen yearly simply because of effective middle(ware)management. :?:

Still possible if you missed the boat the first time around. It's the second coming for back bedroom programmers. 8)

Wish I was that quick, though.

Depends on tea breaks and how many people are working on it. I doubt zelda OOT 3DS took that long or they might as well have made a new game.

How longs a piece of string? Duke Nukem Forever is taking.....forever. These days a typical ps3 game will take between 1-3 years, a small indie game (like piggly) maybe 6 months.

This is why you should work for a company that gives the full hour instead of 30 minutes

Could be worse though - try writing drivers. The usual attitude is ' They're only a few hundred K, so it's not like it's a difficult task, right?' I swear the next kid on a forum to say that to me will be handcuffed to my desk with no parole until he's turned out a fully working and bug-free graphics driver
