My Game Gear has come back to life!

Post by RetroBob » Sat Mar 26, 2011 11:47 am

Many will already know this, but if your Game Gear has got little or no sound or the screen has a really poor viewing angle then it's due to the fact that the capacitors manufactured at the time were of poor quality - unfortunately it seems that most Game Gears have suffered from this. I can actually remember the day when the sound on my Game Gear died - my Dad and I were watching TV and BOOM (or rather click), everything shut off as we had a power cut. Never fear I announced, I have a solution! Not being remotely techie and hating the principle of kids wasting time playing games, he was fairly open to watching TV on the Game Gear. So we watched Corrie for about 20 mins and to my horror the sound faded out over about 3 seconds :(

So, cut to now, I have another but its sound is low and the screen is crap - I was thinking about replacing the caps myself but I have no soldering experience and the instructions I got from someone on eBay weren't great for a layman. So, I sent it off to a chap on eBay (gearforgames) and he gave it the full workout, the sound and screen caps have been replaced, it's been cleaned inside and out, the screen is now dust free and OMG the thing is like new - the GG is so loud now that you can feel the case vibrating in your hand and the screen is lovely and bright and you don't have to have the brightness all the way up to see it! He's brought my Game Gear back to life and I'm so pleased.

The guy is really nice, clearly loves the Game Gear - almost like it's his civic duty to restore them!

Sure this might be advertising but I'm so pleased with this that I don't give a fück - check out his store and love your GG again!

I would do a video for my channel, however I'm going to get my bros GG done for his birthday (the LCD is boned also) and I know he subscribes, so no spoilers (he's not a member here)! Will do one after though I reckon.

If I had PayPal I'd be on that like a shot - the sound's still OK on mine but the screen needs some serious work!

I've used him before and can echo your sentiment. Does a top job.

Thanks for this - of my three Game Gears, one has no sound but a good screen, one has great sound with a badly faded screen, and one has around medium levels of both. What kind of cost is it? I'd get the third one done, certainly!

He fixed my blue GG too - new caps and an LED light mod which improves the battery life.

You're paying for his time as well as for the caps (and return postage (1st class recorded)). Considering this will give you a refurbed cleaned GG that should LAST I think it's well worth it.

Might be worth asking if you get a discount on more than one.

thanks for the link.
I think postage for me might it cost prohibitive to repair my 2, but fired him off an e-mail to enquire.

Yeah, I'll email him and see what he thinks, then try and find a link cable sort-of-thing... And have some two-player whatever on them!

I bought a refurbished Game Gear off him last year and it works a treat, definitely the best guy to go to for Game Gear spares & repairs.

posted 2 off direct to him this week.
from Canada right enough, so shipping time might be slow, but I've waited a while already, another couple of weeks won't be too bad.
can't wait to have some Game Gear fun again !

Just discovered I need this done as the screen has now completely gone, and I can pay the old fashioned way.

Sent mine off to James a few hours back - anyone else pay more for the repairs than their GG?
I know I did!
