Gaming Time Machine

Post by Skull Commander » Sat Mar 12, 2011 11:04 am

If you could experience any gaming era again (or for the first time if you are young enough), when would you choose and why?

I would pick the early 90's for the amazing arcade scene, and the golden 16 bit era. I miss walking into loud arcades full of exciting beat 'em ups like Final Fight and Turtles, and then the emergence of Street Fighter 2 and the one on one fighting boom. Instead what you get nowadays is massive sit down racers and lacklustre lightgun efforts everywhere, and a lack of proper videgames in general.

I also liked the fact back then that the internet didn't spoil games before they came out. Back then I depended on Mean machines, CVG and Super Play for all my gaming news and sometimes I'd buy Gamepro or EGM from America and marvel at the forthcoming games. Latter day you know practially know everything about a game whether you want to or not before it's even ready to be released.

The early 1980's with my ZX Spectrum. So many magical gaming moments, from playing Match Day with my best friend to rushing to the local newsagent for the new issue of Crash.

Easy choice..The arcade scene early to mid 80s was breath-taking. Imagine walking into an arcade and seeing new genres of games and new control schemes appearing on a regular basis. An incredible time to have been a teenager.

I think I would go back to the early 90's too for pretty much the same reasons as the OP.

I got my Lynx in 1990 and my Megadrive a year after and had so many happy times with both those machines and playing on them with all my friends. The game mags were great then too!

That late '70s to early '80s era of arcade coin-op gaming when the likes of Atari and Williams et al were in their pomp.

I'd go back to the 90's...my "wasted youth" playing videogames on the NES and megadrive, ahhh, great fond memorys. But can I also have my mind wiped so its all "new" again, to play Snatcher (mentioned this year, 30 times so far!) with a clean slate would be fantastic :D

I wouldnt want to go back. I have great nostalgic memories of all the games i used to play when i was a kid and going back there with the mindset i have today, id just tarnish those memories with criticism!

8-bit era for me for the Speccy and C64 mainly, it was the most magical time in gaming. While in hindsight it's not the best from a gameplay perspective, it did however feel like it to me at the time. Plus the arcades were amazing. Everything was so fresh, boundaries were constantly being pushed back by clever game developers. It was an exciting time for sure

Agree with the OP 100%, early 1990s was the 'golden era' for me. Really miss walking into arcades at a time when scrolling fighters and Street Fighter II were all the rage.

When you think you've got problems you don't really need,
They're maybe not as bad as they seem,
Cos in a world full of misery, with hatred and greed,
Your problems are another man's dream.

Easily the 90's, I was only 5 in 1990 and had barely experienced much gaming (though I still had) before then, so that was my "golden" era..
