What Sonic 4 should have been is not Sonic 1.
Cool link though. Puts Sega to shame.

This does look very very nice. Whilst i think Sonic 4's controls are horible the visuals are ok, however, Sonic games should move on from the flat 2D only style of the 90's games.

Sonic Colors i thinks is a step in the right direction, although the levels do remind me of Super Mario 64 Bowser levels.

I'd say this is pretty much the answer...Sonic Colors is what Sonic 4 should have been....they should have just made Sonic Colors the next game in the 'main' series and not bothered with Episode 1 at all as, from what I've played of Colors at least, it restores a lot of credibility to the series.

Sonic 4 Episode 1 just feels like a badly cobbled together fan tribute to me....although that's probably insulting towards some of the genuinely great fan games out there :( The one in the original link on this page looks really good in comparison to Sega's official effort.

I'm a fan of the old 2D 90s look. I'd definitely buy that game if it were released. My one and only gripe is that I think the appearance of Sonic himself is ugly (same problem with Sonic 4). A more retro look for him would be easier on the eyes, but otherwise flawless scenery. As freestyler said, really does put Sega to shame.

On the Saturn, with a visual style partially inspired by Astal.

I agree. I personally had nothing against Sonic 4 but Sonic Colours was better in every way and it managed to blend 2D and 3D platforming sections well. Hopefully for the next console Sonic game they take Colours as a base and improve things from there.

Sonic 4 is like one of those naff Hollywood remakes of 80s horror films that keep popping up at the cinema. Had 4 come out straight after Sonic 2006, it might have been appreciated, but Colours rendered it irrelevant. If anything, releasing 4 spoilt what should have been a celebration of the death of the Sonic Cycle.

Sonic Axiom and Sonic 1 Megamix are both massively superior to Sonic 4, but I'm persevering with it.

Been waiting almost seventeen years for it, so it deserves a chance, right? The fact alone that I finally made the decision to buy a 360 when I found out Sonic 4 was on the way is further reason to TRY and enjoy it. The controls and physics are horrible, yes. The Casino music is the worst music I've ever heard in my entire life, and they're STILL calling him bloody Eggman, AND, it's more of a "re-imagining" than a sequel, but... I'm forcing myself to like it.

In that respect, Sonic 4 is as good as the game.com.
Can't wait to download/play that Sonic Fan Remix thing.

Liking The S Factor at the moment. Not crazy on the characters, but it has a completeness most hacks are missing.

I enjoyed Sonic 4, especially once you unlock super sonic, that really sorts the sluggish speed out!
but Sonic Fan Remix, Sonic Megamix & that new Sonic 2 HD really put sega's effort to shame.

PLayed the demo of this remix and really liked it. The only issue I had was a low frame rate as it seems to need a pretty high spec machine to run it at 60fps.
Much better than Sonic 4.
