Best TV Out for original Xbox?

Post by chewy » Tue Jan 04, 2011 4:34 am

Hey guys. I read that the original Xbox can output in HD, [after some tinkering ;)] any truth? What else apart from different dashboard, do I require?
Is it worth it?

Yes it does to 720p.
You'll need a component cable to get the best results. I did it via XBMC a while ago and can't remember the exact steps, but I'm sure you'll be able to google a "how to" fairly easily.

I think it does 1080i as well but don't quote me. As said a component lead is best.

It was definitely capable of 1080p but I'm not sure anything was ever released that used it. I bought mine in Australia and the 1st time I heard "1080p" was from the sales chap waxing about it.

Component is definately the best way to output anyway - this should do the trick - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-Component- ... B000OF22LG

1080i is worse than 720p as an interlaced image is worse than a progressive one.

But yeah 1080i is a higher res, not necessarily the best though. :)

Ah that is a good point. It seems it is still easy to be caught by the "higher numbers are better!!" phenomenon if you aren't paying attention :D

The vector games on Atari Anthology look fantastic in 720p/1080i

Component output for me anyway... at the very least you'll get 480p from the majority of games

Indeed but it is the highest I think it does. You would always go progressive though. :)

I believe they can output 1920x1080 via a VGA cable - which IS 1080p but I'm not 100% on that.

As well as the games in the list, DVD's and movies can also be upscaled to 720p / 1080i and look as good as any dedicated upscaler. So running XBMC on a modded (soft in my case) Xbox makes for a quite nice media centre.
HADDOCKEN!
