Barbarian 2 on the Amiga. The game was hopeless and dull but in the middle of loading the game up a skeleton hand comes up and a demonic voice says "Insert Disc 2" followed by an animated skeleton laughing eerilie. It was the only reason to load the game up!

And, very unoriginal but Knightlore / Alien 8 are right up there.

Also Virus and Starglider 2 were stunning looking true 3D games at the time.

When I got my Spectrum for Christmas '83, my parents bought me a couple of games to go with it. One of which was 4D Timegate by Quicksilva.

Bear in mind this illusion of flying through 3D space was long before I'd seen Elite, so it blew me away. And you could land on the planets!!! FANTASTIC!

OMG! 4D Timegate - I remember that one! I'm going to have to go download the game from WOS now of course - thanks for jogging my memory :)

For me (I had an Amstrad CPC 464) it was:

Trantor - The last stormtrooper. I loved that Digitized speech

Prince of Persia the animation was outstanding for it's time.

Two of the worst disappointments were:

Space Harrier - I remember buying it after looking at the screenshots on the back. Not realising that they were arcade screenshots, you can imagine my shock at how different it looked when it loaded!

Outrun - I remember sitting for a whole half hour with headphones on, listening to Magical Sound shower on my walkman while trying to control the most unresponsive red brick in the world!!!!

Just a quick thought: the falling snow on some levels in Creatures 2 (C64) impressed me at the time.

I forgot to include Tir Na Nog on the Speccy.

I remember being bowled over when I first loaded it up. Playability was a little suspect, but who cares! ;)
