Is It Worth Buying A Game New On Release Day Anymore?

Post by James A » Wed Dec 08, 2010 7:58 am

Reason im asking this is that since the end of October there has been a glut of new games released. Some of them i though id get when the price came down some i bought on release day. The last few weeks ive seen game like the new Medal Of Honour, Fallout New Vegas, Enslaved & many more at £19.99 or less. So it got me thinking is this just a thing in the run up to Xmas or is it just pointless getting a game on release date when you know a month down the road you can pick it up for half price?

I try to avoid buying games on release due to the fact that they drop in price so rapidly these days so unless its a game I really, really want I'll just wait.
Not sure if its a good thing in the long run for gaming, I assume it can't be healthy for new titles to drop in price (sometimes down to below half price) in just a few weeks after release?

I guess it doesn't help either that the length of some games appears to be short either. Some of the games I've picked up cheap lately I'd have felt ripped off paying full price for.

Only if you're absolutely dying to play it. I think the last game I bought on release day was Mirror's Edge and Fallout 3 back in November 2008 - there's been very little since then that I've really felt an urge to own as soon as possible, and tend to wait until games are less than £20.

Personally wait 3-4 weeks before buying.Prices will be more my bracket, will hopefully have completed/be in need of a rest from stuff i was playing and won`t be busy work wise.Want Dead Space 2.But it`s release? same week i only get 1 day off.Pointless paying full whack, just for it to sit on a shelf.

I only ever buy Fifa on launch day and that is only because 3 of us playing online teams together and we love it. Other than that, a big fat no! Games drop rapidly now to sub £30 withing a couple of months usually.

If it's by Shigeru Miyamoto, yes. Otherwise no. Unless it's from SEGA, in which case HELL NO. And if it's EA or Activision, pretty much never since you've probably already got something 97% identical to it already.

My copy of Castlevania for the 360 arrived from play.com today and I only paid £17.99 for it. Seeing as its apparantly inferior to the PS3 version I think that this is a more reasonable price.

Enslaved is another game which has dropped in price pretty rapidly to and I'm waiting to pick up New Vegas on the cheap in the new year.

I reckon I could've saved around £100 this year if I hadn't bought most of my games on release day. :(

Last game I bought on day of release was Nemesis on the Spectrum back in '87 and I learned a harsh lesson that day....

It really isn't, they drop in price so quick that I'd lose a lot of the value. I hardly get the time to play games so I'm not bothered about playing them on release. Come early february I'm going to have a field day with all the games I've half wanted that are out now, vanquish, enslaved, etc.

Got Crackdown 2 the other day for £12 they where selling it new for £15.

Buying games on lunch day depends how much you want them.

Threw all the years of waiting for Duke Nukem forever I have learnt that waiting a month or so is nothing

I've more or less stopped buying games on day of release nowadays. I've got loads to play, so by the time I'm ready, most games have dropped in price drastically. I'm actually trying to stick to £9.99 or under for my games, unless it's a title that I really, really want right away.
