The BEST 2D Platform games of ALL TIME - LIST

Post by ChipTune » Mon Nov 29, 2010 2:52 pm

As I absolutely LOVE platformers and have been playing so many of them for, well since 1989, but recently the last few months have been packed with me playing platform games whenever I go near a console (or emulator on wii).

Some games have stood the test of time well, others not so much. Some will remain classics even if they do not live up to the nostalgic memories of yesteryear.. Some of the games may not even be considered to be good at all by many, but these are the ones I keep coming back to and in many cases am still playing after nearly 20 years.

I missed out on many systems so it cannot be considered a complete list as I never played any Spectrum / Amstrad / Atari ST games, and yes it will become obvious I am a Nintendo fan. Im also leaving out annoying platform games that have gimmicks or rely heavily on puzzles, we are talking proper 2d platformers here.. none of your 'Lost Winds' here I am afraid.

Due to my love of these 2d games (yes we are staying away from 3d 'platformers' here because.. well it's my list thats why  ) and my many mental 'quirks' that result in me obsessively making lists, I bring you.. THE BEST 2D PLATFORMERS OF ALL TIME..

Yoshi's Island. :D

I went off 2D platformers and 2D games in general for quite a while, but having just picked up Yoshi's Island for the first time fairly recently, it's really shown me what I had been missing and reminded me how much fun, beautiful and clever 2D platformers can be.

So much so that I recently aquired Super Mario Bros. 3, NSMB Wii, and Muramasa which I might have otherwise let slip me by.
Pratty's trade list, updated (May 2019)!

I must be one of few that disagree with Mario Bros - while it is a cracking game...its rather clunky and dated and Sonic was far better ¬_¬

Being as neutral as I can I can't look past the SNES for being the console that was the pinnacle for the platforming genre. Before the industry became obsessed with 3D this was the platform of choice for platformers- as it played host to beautifully drawn and coloured 2D games. Its slower processor speed meant that it wasn't really great for shooters and dev houses (particularly Konami who didn't put a foot wrong on the console) played to the SNES's strengths - that lovely pallete and sound chip.

Take away the "best ever" - Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island from the lineup and you are still left with a top drawer "second string" lineup. I don't like list-me-do's but there's no option to just list the better one's I have for the SNES ....

Alien 3
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs
Cool Spot
DoReMi Fantasy
Donkey Kong Country 1-3
Out to Lunch
Plok
Pop n Twinbee Rainbell Bell Adventures
Prince of Persia
Super Adventure Island
Super Castlevania IV
Legend of Mystical Ninja
Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse
Tiny Toons : Buster Busts Loose

Each one of these is a polished, highly replayable experience that still passes muster today - and remember these are the second string titles!!!!

Wardner (Arcade) needs to be in the list. We played it in the Retro League, and I loved it. I even finished it on one credit.

You could do worse than start with Manic Miner and Chuckie Egg.

Scrolling platformers such as Mario never clicked with me. I much prefer the static screen gems such as Bounty Bob Strikes Back, Donkey Kong, Chuckie Egg, Manic Miner, Underwurlde , Gods & most recently Castlevania SOTN.

Disney made some excellent 2D platformers back in t'day. Focusing solely on the Megadrive (because why not), it's nice to see that you included Quackshot, but here are some others which I think worthy of intense bursts of praise:

1. Maui Mallard (SUPREMELY underrated/forgotten gem)
2. Castly of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
3. World Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (this and the above both boasted impressively creative approaches to level design)
4. Aladdin (I'm a lot more fond of the licensed game than of the film)
5. There is no five. It just would have looked a bit lacking to only list four.

Other noteworthy 2D Megadrive Platformers (of note) include any game starring Asterix, James Pond (particularly his third outing) and Sparkster (except for his second outing).

Also, whilst Sonic 2 might be the best example of this particular genre (or, if you will, of the gaming medium in general), his other entries must not be neglected. To combine Sonic 3 with Sonic and Knuckles and play from the beginning makes for an adventure of truly epic proportions.

Any list put here is more of a favorites list than a best of all time list.
So my favorites are...

Prince of Persia
Metal Slug series
Double Dragon series
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Megaman series
Battletoads
TMNT

Little Fighter 2
