Missile Command Ports

Post by Darran@Retro Gamer » Fri Nov 19, 2010 6:55 am

I'm putting together a list of ports of the game for a feature but it's proving rather trickey as it's not clear which of the many speccy versions are official. Any ideas?

So far I have

Atari 800
Atari 2600
Atari 5200
Port on Atari Jaguar
Possible version on C64
Game Boy Color
Game Boy
Master System (part of smash hits)

Most of the others seem to be on superior software (which could easily emulate the game) but I wan't to make sure I haven't missed anything.

I just wanted to say how excited I am about this feature! :D

There are indeed many many Missile Command clones on the Spectrum, but as far as I'm aware there wasn't an official port though I may be wrong.

There were 3 versions on Atari Classics Evolved on the PSP (Arcade original, 2600 version & "evolved" version)

There was a Playstation 1 remake that if I recall correctly wasn't much shakes.

Oh, and the Atari Lynx of course! :D

Yeah, I picked that one up at R3Play, though it's not an official port.

There's also the iphone version which got pulled before I got my phone so I never got to play it. Absolutely gutted as it looked ace. :(

Oh and there was one on a Megadrive "arcade classics" compilation too.

Don't know if it was official, but it seemed to have a cover for a tape, it may be the one.

It's a difficult thing to call because it came out at a time where IP wasn't fiercely protected like it was now. I may just do a general selection of stuff regardless of whether its official or unofficial. Oh and as good as the Lynx version is it's not going in (the conversions section) as it's more a direct sequel.

Not quite as relevant, but it was also included in Atari Anniversary Advance for the GBA.

Yeah, go with this.
Not just on Missile Command but on all future issues.
It's probably not uncommon for an unofficial release to improve on the official release.

It's a good version, despite a lack of final polish (dreadful fonts, etc.)

Maybe now new Atari stuff's finally coming back to the App Store (such as Glu's new version of Paperboy, which, sadly, isn't that good), someone will have another go at Missile Command.

I know there was a conversion on the PS1 (well, a remake actually) and I think it was also released on PC at the same time (as was Asteroids). There was one on the Mega Drive, on the same cart as Centipede, Millipede and one other (think it was Asteroids as well).

If you're looking for derivatives , the Atlantis on the 2600 is done in a similar vein , albeit with descending spaceships rather than missiles
