Your Favourite Japlish?

Post by RetroKingSimon » Mon Nov 15, 2010 12:32 pm

I don't know about you but I find good/bad Japlish in games highly entertaining. :) We all know about "All your base are belong to us" and suchlike, but what are your favourite examples of bad translation and which game(s) are they from? Does any one system seem to suffer more than others?

Easy. The Ninja Kids (Arcade, Taito)

This isn't the half of it- every scrap of English in this game is mistranslated.

Also, Donpachi has a bizarre message when you encounter a boss, written in very small text:
Donpachi's warning wrote:THIS IS NOT SIMILATION. GET READY TO DESTOROY THE ENEMY. TARGET FOR THE WEAK POINTS OF F**KIN' MACHINE. DO YOUR BEST YOU HAVE EVER DONE.

Yeah, at times I was really dragged out of FFVII because of sloppy translations. Sadly it was no better during FF:XIV Online Beta.

Famously the ending of Ghostbusters on NES:

And my personal fave from Double Dragon:

Mageneto at the end of Konami's X-Men: The Arcade Game....

'Welcome to DIE!'

The voiceovers for Professor X were pretty poor in that game too.

Another favourite of mine is the civilians being attacked by zombies in House Of The Dead 2....

'Don't come!'

Ahh I forgot the Jap version of Super Mario Sunshine!

After all that ridicule they got it's not as if they'd do THE SAME BLOODY THING for Super Mario Galaxy, is it?

Ahh... Ohh... Ok then.

I think the suffix of get is like a phrase in Japan though.

Sort of like, when I buy something sometimes I say "something> get!"

When you think you've got problems you don't really need,
They're maybe not as bad as they seem,
Cos in a world full of misery, with hatred and greed,
Your problems are another man's dream.

It's been claimed that this lovely bit of Engrish from 'Blazing Star' on the Neo-Geo (one of my favourite shooters) is responsible for first starting off the now utterly rampant internet expression 'FAIL'. Really not sure whether I believe that or not!
