Spot on with this one... but only the DC and Arcade, the PS2 version was hank.
Pity. What was it that made it so 'hank'?

This is without doubt the toughest top 5 iv ever done but here goes...

1: Daytona USA (Arcade) The incredible courses, catchy music with the intro tune i.m.o being one of the best game music pieces ever, 29 AI cars & great gameplay make this such a fantastic racer but add 7 other human players and the game becomes an event you will never forget.

2: Fzero GX (Gamecube) Insane courses that were miles more imaginitive than the levels in X and such a challenge along with great gameplay make this one of the finest racers ever.

3: Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA) pefect handling with fantastic courses + the original Snes circuits as unlockables made for the best Mario Kart Game.

4: Daytona USA 2 (Arcade) Not quite as good as the original but still great courses, gameplay, music and some neat touches like the Rollercoaster, Pirate Ship & giant spider on the 2nd track.

5: Gran Turismo 2 (PS1) If there were more than 5 AI cars racing this would be my number 2 but nonetheless it still featured more cars (at the time) than any other racer, unprecedented tuning options and wonderful courses as well as some crazy endurance challenges. GT5 will become the new king soon though.

I have to mention Destruction Derby 2 (ps1), Burnout (ps2), Micro Machines 2 TT (MD) & V3 (ps1), Sega Rally 1 & 2 (Arcade), Wipeout 2097 (ps1), Rage Racer (ps1), Outrun 1 (Arcade) & Coast To Coast (Xbox), Lotus Espirit Turbo Challenge (MD), Hydro & 4 Wheel Thunder (DC), F1 97 (ps1) and Dirt Dash (Arcade) as favourites of mine.
The square is a great shape, and one that is criminally underused in modern game design. In the push to ever more granular, chaotic environments, games have lost sight of the simple pleasures of right angles and straight lines.

Oops forgot about the brilliant Diddy Kong Racing. Wouldn't be far of my top 5.

Wow - the nice thing about coming late to a thread is getting to see everyone else's. Helps me remember :)

1. Ridge Racer (Arcade/PS1)
2. PGR4 (Xbox 360)
3. Motorstorm Pacific Rift (PS3 - yes, this was the best £11 I spent on the PS3 - it's absolutely brilliant!)
4. Winning Run '91 ( I wish this would get released, emulated or something. It's only listed here because I remember it being aces!)
5. Hard Drivin' (Arcade)

(But there is lots in this thread I loved: Wipeout Series (the first was the best IMHO) Rage Racer, Ridge Racer Type, Ridge Racer Revolution (in that order) Need For Speed 3DO, Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed, Need for Speed Road Challenge, Virtua Racing, Sega Rally 2, Grid, Gran Turismo, GT2, GT3, GT4, obviously GT5)

Rather tough to choose a top 5 (plus there's a lot of classics I've never played or only played once) so I'll just write them down really quickly.

1. Grid (PC/ 360)
2. OutRun (Arcade)
3. Diddy Kong Racing (N64)
4. Blur (360)
5. Lotus Turbo Esprit (Speccy)

Sega Rally (Arcade)
Daytona USA (Arcade)
Gran Turismo (PS1)
Burnout 3 (Xbox)
Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) - Yes I know its now quite out yet, but I'll definatly play the heck out of it when it does!

I can still play Sega Rally and Daytona on my PC using a Sega Model 2 arcade emulator, they both play fantastic too!

lets see.

1. Dirt 2. Didnt think a new one would be my number 1 but its damn good.
2. Winning Run. What an arcade racer.
3. Powerdrift. Never played a game like it at the arcades.
4. Test Drive 2. Jerky as **** but how fun it was on the Amiga.
5. Outrun 2 2006 - perfection really.

there's also this other game, in the arcades, you sit in this little car thingy and the screen is
huge, its projected, and I have no idea what the name of it is but if I knew it, it would certainly
be my number 1 racing game. You go off road, through high grass, geez I cant remember that much,
all I remember is that it was a real experience, like the mine ride but you're in control. Also as hard as
hell.
