I was playing Street Fighter 2 Turbo on my SNES tonight and Honda's stage comes up. I think it has to be one of the best looking stages in the whole game:
Now, I would guess the setting/backdrops aren't the most important thing in the game, but it's still cool Capcom took the time to design and draw these things. It makes the whole "world warrior" thing that bit more special.
What gets your vote as the best looking beat-em-up stage?

This one, from Guilty Gear X2#Reload: The Midnight Carnival (longest fighting game name, ever)...
And this one, from Soul Calibur IV (best fighting game, ever):

It's in a swinging cage, the walls of which can be knocked down. Screeching elephants and loads of fire and stuff makes for a happy fight.

I was recently impressed by this stage in
Tekken 6:
Though the Dead Pool in
Mortal Kombat II was one of my faves:

Can't wait to see how they pull this off with the new
Mortal Kombat.

A couple of the new stages in Super SFIV were pretty nice - especially the one based on the sky scraper in Metro City.
The Strider and Megaman stages in Marvel vs Capcom looked really nice and had some great cameo's.
All of Capcom Vs SNK's stages - I liked CvS2 more gameplay wise but the original had the nicer Backgrounds and music.
Looking forward I'm really liking the stages that have been unveiled so far in Marvel Vs Capcom 3 - especially the Resident Evil stage and the Asguard stage.

Id say pretty much any of the stages from Super Street Fighter 4 because I love the way the scenery reacts to impacts, like in the back street or downtown when theres a heavy drop the spectators fall over or tables, signs etc move. But the distillery is the stand out one for me.
Also the raft stage on Soul Blade on the PS1. Remember first seeing that and thinking it was incredible.

Perhaps change the title of this thread to Best fighter stage?
A beat-em-up is a game like Streets of Rage.
In which case, level 1 of SoR2.

Many of the
King of Fighter titles had excellent stages. Some of my favourites (that I could locate screenshots of):

Hmm, they don't seem to have worked fully. Presumably there is a limit on the size of embed images on this board? Or it could just be this rubbish PC I'm using at the moment with an olde IE, etc...

yeah, that confused me a bit too - I was going to go for the lift stage from SoR1.
With fighting games, nothing really jumps out at me, though I love the look and the music from the Elena's Stage on Street Fighter III 3rd Strike:

Any fighting game where the characters have their own stages and not just a random selection that don't apply to anyone in particular.
For example I like all the original Streetfighter 2 ones as they 'belonged' to individual characters. MVC2 was just loads of random nothings though which sucked.
I also prefer hand drawn to strange out of place 3D backgrounds when the characters are still 2D.
My ultimate fave will always and forever be the KOF 99 raining stage though. Dunno if this link will work:

Thats probably my favourite KOF background right there. I especially liked the fact it starts out as a nice sunny BG that has kids playing and people minding their own business. Then on round 2 it becomes overcast with a few drops of rain before round 3 has it pouring down.
