Your thoughts on the Virtual Boy?

Post by Spooky » Wed May 05, 2010 4:24 pm

As some of you may have read, I bought a Virtual Boy a few weeks ago (shortly after visiting the French video games museum... coincidence? ) and even though I had to think really hard about taking the plunge (especially since I wanted to buy a Neo Geo in the first place!), I have to admit, I'm quite impressed!
I've bought 5 games so far, including 2 schmups and I've really enjoyed playing each game and the 3D effect does add something new. I've had no headaches so far, even though I've never played for more than 1 hour straight.

What do you think about the VB? How many of you own one? Did you buy it just for the sake of collecting or do you enjoy playing it?

I've heard good things about Wario Land, but from what I've seen, it seems quite expensive. What are your favourite games on the VB?

I bought one a few years back simply because I'd always wanted to play on one...

Have to say I hated it, not because it made me feel sick, just because of the seating position required, what with you having to face a table, whilst the thing falls over... maybe it was just mine ha ha. I really just could not get used to it.

Quite liked the Wario Land game that I had for it, but my other game was some awful baseball nonsense.

I sold it on I'm afraid, I'm glad I can say I've owned and played on a VB, but I would not buy another one.
Horses for courses though, glad you like yours... maybe if I'd stuck it out, or had some better games.

I played SirClive's and its got a far worse reputation than it deserves. The visuals are fairly crisp and clear, the 3D while not pronounced is effective and some of the games are reasonably playable. I can't say I've any desire to own one myself, but its an interesting bit of kit and I can see how some would be drawn to it.

Absolutely!
Yes, it is quite an unusual piece of hardware, but it brings something new and interesting to gaming. I will not say it's my favourite console, but its bad reputation is extremely exaggerated.
But I also agree on the fact that you need to set up everything perfectly to enjoy playing it. The first time I tried it on my dining table, I had no headaches but my neck was really sore...

It would be better if it wasn't for the Red and Black colour pallet.
Oh and a few more games wouldn't go amiss

Wario on it is damn good, but does not warrant buying it just for it.

I love my one, got nine games for it. Playing it at night, with the lights out and the blinds closed is the only way I can play properly though, which is a bugger.

Jack Bros. is my favourite game on it, and I'm on the lookout for that Insmouse Mansion thingy. Looks fun.

Me and the girlfriend played on Shaun's at Rewind; I liked it, can't remember the game we played but it was good fun, certainly wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Wouldn't mind getting myself one day it has to be said (after the Turbografx-16, CD32, Atari 2600, Intellivision...)

Are there any filters to change the colour, perhaps to a nice Tron blue instead of the red?

I mainly play 3 games on mine:

Mario Tennis
Wario Land
Jack Bros

I also give Mario Clash a go every now & again. All in all it doesn't deserve the reputation it has. Sure it's very red, but let's be honest: the library of games let it down really. Any machine no matter how poor can be successful if it has good games.

Reminds me, I get Panic Bomber for it tomorrow :)

I like the Virtual Boy. How can you not love a system that's so quirky and inconvenient? Like the Vectrex, it's one of those consoles you don't get to experience properly through emulation.

@ipmarks: there was a headband available for the VB. Although walking around while playing is probably not the best idea...

I played on that there one at Rewind.

Glad I got to play one but it really did make my eyes feel funny after about 5 minutes. I've been known to suffer the odd migraine & bout of eye strain so I'm really glad I didn't get one back in the day!
