A fantastic wee game I've been spending a bit of time on recently is I Am Level;

It's one of those rare occasions where the retro look & feel are spot on AND the controls work really really well. It's only free until 1st October so give it a download.

Also there's a game released at the weekend that I backed on Kickstarter a while back called Brave Bit Absolutely hard as nails, unforgiving platformer, but the controls are again spot on & there's a hell of a sense of achievement when you complete a level.

Oh and I'm in the credits for this one as a kickstarter backer (as are a few fellow RG forumites) 1st time I've ever been in the credits for a computer game, nice.

both the above look great will be checking them out.

Have bought Blitz as it's one of my all time favourites. lovely Vic 20 look. A touch crisper on the control & it would be perfect.

Very glad to see retro & indie style games like these on Android - hope they do well

Right, I've joined the Android crowd proper at the weekend, picked up a 10" Asus tablet.

Having got into iOS on my phone largely thanks to Llamasoft, Minter's migration to Android has made me reconsider the options. Fancied a tablet for comics for a while, now I have one and I have to say its ace and a fraction of the price of Mrs Ant's iPad.

So what, currently, are the essential apps, emulators and games for Android?

Looking on the Play store, there's lots of variants of emus, but which to use?

I need a good version of MAME and a Speccy emu for starters, so what's recommended?

And is it worth buying the full version of Comic Rack, or is the free one sufficient (I tried a couple of others, but Comic Rack seems to give the sharpest image).

Any good puzzle games akin to Trainyard?

Which pad to use? I paired a Wiimote as its small and easy to use, but how's game compatibility with those? Am I better off using my PS3 or 360 pads, or is there a better alternative?

Blame Minter, he jumped first ;)

Now I've got a bit of cash spare I'm seriously contemplating upgrading from my old iPhone 3GS to a newer model on a contract, so I'm not ditching iOS, just expanding my gaming options.

You must know a decent Speccy emu though?

I dont have Android, was very very tempted due to the emulators and still am BUT i have so many iOS apps i think its too late for me to switch really, plus i just want one main system. I've got my Speccy emulator working on my iOS device so i'm happy ;)

But yeah theres a lot of great games on Android and it seems very cheap, so tempted !

Marvin's the Speccy Emulator of choice. https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... n&hl=en_GB
Pairing it with a physical keyboard (bluetooth or wired) of some description is essential though!

MAME 4 Droid is pretty decent MAME Emu https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... d&hl=en_GB Though I don't use it too often, I THINK it can pair ok with a Wiimote.

Download the Amazon Appstore http://www.amazon.co.uk/mobile-apps/b?i ... 1661657031 & check their Free App of the day each day, about once or twice a fortnight you can get a pretty decent game among the dross.

Oh I hear Train Crisis HD is good.. https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... s&hl=en_GB

Funny you mention that Smila, I did do a search for Ovine by Design yesterday and it threw up a blank. Or rather, it throws up loads of sheep related apps rather than hitting on the developer name first.

Never mind, you're one purchase up now.

And thanks for the info Hawk, just what I needed to know.

The Humble Mobile Bundle 2 is out, and there are six games - DRM free - for Android only:

Punch Quest - Somewhat akin to a one touch scrolling beat 'em up. Looks like a throwaway, but is surprisingly good fun.
Time Surfer - Looks like a throwaway and, yeah, it is one. Might appeal to Tiny Wings fans, I suppose.
Bloons TD 5 - Yet another tower defence clone, but a well made one.
Star Command - A flawed gem. Tries to be FTL for mobiles and falls short, but still fun.
Carmageddon - Needs no introduction.
Ravensword: Shadowlands - Open world RPG. Plenty of game in there if it's your sort of thing.

You need to pay more than the average (currently about $4.50) to get the latter two, but I think they're well worth it. They'll probably throw in a few more games later if previous bundles are anything to go by.

FIFA 14 is free for Android and iOS. Tried it last night just to see how it ran, it seems pretty good to me.

As predicted, they've added QWOP, God of Blades and Karateka Classic to the Humble Bundle. The latter should be of interest to retro gamers as it's a re-make of a 1984 game by Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner.

This is a great game, played it non stop when it came out last Xmas. The prequel (Ravensword) is a nice old skool open world RPG, but this new one looks great. Think if anything the graphics are 'too good' and they should have added more quests, still well worth picking up, still has a lot of content and a nice story to it all.

Some nice levels to explore, still amazes me we get games of this quality on our handheld devices. Come a long way from the old days!
