Gamecube Import Titles To Get?

I picked up a Gamecube freeloader disc yesterday and was wondering if there are any US / Jap Gamecube games worth picking up that never got a release here? Got to admit its one console thats passed me over in regards to importing titles.

If you enjoyed the Donkey Konga titles then the soundtracks are quite different and the Japanese versions are well worth picking up. Sadly you can't play them with Freeloader because the game insists on you using a properly formatted Japanese memory card (although the US versions will be fine with Freeloader on a PAL Cube). Likewise for Mr Driller Drill Land. With those off the menu, then let's see... what do I have in my collection...

If you like shooters then there's Shikigami No Shiro 2, Radirgy and Chaos Field. I think Alien Hominid wasn't released in Europe, although the Xbox version was, so you might have played it that way. The second Baten Kaitos game wasn't either, so if you enjoyed the first, you can pick that one up too. Ultimate Muscle is good for a laugh if you want a multiplayer arcade wrestling game. Honestly though, most of the game stuff did make Europe, so the good exclusives are thinner on the ground than you might think; having said that, it might be cheaper still to import given the prices of various PAL titles in the past (Chibi Robo anyone?!).

Just to note above, use a different memory card for any Japanese games compared to US/PAL, in case any title takes offence and tries to format the memory card...

Star Soldier maybe if you like 2d shooters. Does this thing force 60hz? If so then Ikaruga. I just bought the PAL version of this and it is sooooo sssloooooooowww.

NTSC by specification is 60hz.

Chibi is well worth picking up as NTSC or PAL but could well be cheaper as NTSC. I'll second Alien Hominid as well though it is available on XBLA as well as Xbox.

If you're into football games then a copy of Winning Eleven 6 is a nice addition to your collection. It has a cooler, smaller GC case and a nice cardboard sleeve. Who cares if it is available as Pro Evo 2 for 99p on PS2!

Indeed. But we are talking about playing an NTSC game disc on a PAL console, are we not?

They should play at 60Hz. I've tried booting PAL Cube titles in the US on a US Cube with Freeloader, and unless the game had a 60Hz mode, then they couldn't be played (as the US TV couldn't handle it and rolled the picture). Ergo in reverse, I imagine a US game should still play at 60Hz regardless of what Cube type it is played upon.

You can still play them but you just can't save your progress. 'Mr Driller Drill Land' is so brilliant its still worth getting if you can find it cheap enough!

I collected a lot of NTSC titles at the time as so many third party titles weren't being released in Europe.

I'd also recommend 'Pac-Man World Rally' - even though it's too easy - it uses the Mario Kart Arcade engine and features an exclusive 4-player mode (PS2 version only had 2-player).

Other titles worth picking up that didn't get a PAL release:

Alien Hominid (PS2 version probably cheaper)
Amazing Island (exclusive remake - not brilliant but fun)
Chaos Field (Decent shooter - originally on the Dreamcast?)
Intellivision Lives! Arcade Classics (PS2 version probably cheaper)
Megaman 1-8: Anniversary Collection (a must have!)
Megaman X Collection (another must have!)
Midway Arcade Treasures Vols 1-3 (PS2/XBOX version definitely cheaper)
Nintendo Puzzle Collection (Jap only - Dr Mario etc)
Robocop (Jap only - not a great game but better than the PS2 version - very rare)
Smashing Drive (Great arcade fun for 5 minutes)
Star Soldier (Jap only - nice shooter)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare (PS2 and XBOX versions are expensive so this is worth an import - You can unlock 'Turtles in Time' arcade!!!)

Nobody mentioned DreamMix TV World Fighters? Surely worth an import.

Also, the bizarre Cubivore.

An excellent suggestion. I think the way it worked was PAL got "Doshin the Giant" & the US got "Cubivore"... but don't quote me on that

Anyway, it's a very interesting game, & well worth a purchase, though pricewise it tends to sit at the higher end of the spectrum.

I didn't see it listed above, but Nascar on the Cube is one of the best racing games i've had the privilege to play.

The only import game I have is Baten Kaitos Origins. It's a great RPG, and it's the reason I bought the Freeloader.

The Japanese Adventure Island update is brill. As with the excellent PCE version, its a slightly rejigged arcade Wonderboy with different graphics- so very straightforward, but really well paced.

Here's the PCE version:

Get both just to be on the safe side.
